Mahabir Pun Biography

Mahabir Pun is one of the most popular and richest Teacher who was born on January 22, 1955 in Myagdi District, Dhawalagiri Zone, Nepal. Pun was born and raised in Nangi in western Nepal’s mountainous district Myagdi District. He grazed cattle and sheep as a child and attended a village school that didn’t have paper, pencils, textbooks, or qualified teachers. The local population was not educated and many joined the British Gurkha Army. His father, a retired Gurkha, made a remarkable decision to move his family to the south of Nepal and invest all their savings in Pun’s education. Pun taught for 12 years after high school. He also supported his sisters and brothers’ education. After many applications to US and UK universities, Pun was granted a partial scholarship to University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1989. He graduated with a bachelor’s in Science Education in 1992. He returned to his village twenty-four years later, having fled the area as a child. He realized the importance of sustainable education in Nangi and set out to create a high school that would serve as an example for economic and educational development. Pun established the Himanchal High School, focusing on computer education and other income-generating programs. In 2001, he received a master’s in Educational Administration from the University of Nebraska.

Pun was later awarded an honorary doctorate as Doctor of Humane Letters by the University of Nebraska in 2007 for his outstanding service to Nepal.

Mahabir Pun led the initiative to register a nonprofit named “Rashtriya Abiskar Kendra” in 2012, widely termed as National Innovation Center in English. Primary objective to establish the Innovatuion center according to Mahabir is to foster research and developments for the economic development of the country. Mahabir worked with the government for funding of the project which did not happen and since July 2016, Mahabir is running a crowd funding campaign to fund National Innovation efforts. National Innovation Center crowd funding campaign plans to collect build a 10MW hydropower station, which according to the initiative would sustainably fund it’s running cost. Mahabir has got social attraction with his donation of land for the National Innovation Center.

In 2014 Pun was awarded the Jonathan B. Postel Service Award by the Internet Society.

In 2004, Pun was awarded the Overall Social Innovations Award by the Global Ideas Bank (aka the Institute for Social Inventions). They stated that the project uses a unique mix of solar power and tree-based relay system and wireless technology to help yak farmers communicate with their families and allow them to send children to school.

Pun realized that information technology could transform his village’s education system and economy while he was in the United States of America. He had also taken courses to learn how to assemble, repair, and use computers. He returned to Nepal and campaigned successfully for the donation of computers from Japan, Malaysia and Australia. The generators were installed in a stream nearby by two small hydro generators, which were donated by climbers from Singapore. Pun started teaching computer classes to students, teachers, and others, but it was impossible to establish a phone connection to Pokhara and the Internet. Pun emailed the BBC for suggestions. After Pun e-mailed the BBC, asking for help, volunteers from Europe and America responded. Donors and volunteers assisted him in rigging a wireless connection between Nangi, and Ramche using small, handmade antennae that were mounted in trees. A few small grants led to the creation of two improvised relay stations on mountaintops and a link to Pokhara. Nangi was connected to the Internet wirelessly by 2003. Pun later brought in computers from overseas, distributed them to schools in other villages and started work on a wireless distance learning project that would generate income.

The Ashoka Foundation, a global association of social entrepreneurs, elected Pun as an Ashoka Fellow in 2002. Pun’s contributions to the overcoming of geographical isolation in many communities where he works was recognized by the Foundation. The Foundation also noted that Pun had a unique idea that could be replicated in other areas geographically remote with limited educational and economic opportunities.

In 2007, Pun was awarded the Magsaysay Award, considered by some to be the Nobel Prize of Asia, in recognition of “his innovative application of wireless computer technology in Nepal, bringing progress to remote mountain areas by connecting his village to the global village”. Pun is one of four Nepalis to receive the Magsaysay Award, and the only one to receive the Magsaysay Award for Community Leadership.
