Hogan tried to qualify for both the 2008 Summer Olympics as well as 2012 Summer Olympics but was unsuccessful. She was disappointed with her results and considered quitting the sport. However, she changed coaches to Michele Eray who has led to better finishes. Kaitlyn McElroy and she have competed in K-2 events together, with the pair training at Oklahoma City’s Boathouse District.
Hogan graduated from UCSB and attended the San Diego Regional Lifeguard Academy. There, she was introduced canoe sprinting with another class member. Six months later, Hogan was a member of the U.S. National Team at the 2005 ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships. Since 2005, she has been a part of the national team every year.

Margaret “Maggie” Hogan, born January 1, 1979, is an American canoe runner and former college swimmer. She is now a member the U.S. National Canoe and Kayak Team. She was the first American canoe sprinter to qualify for Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympics.
She matriculated at the University of California Santa Barbara, and swam for the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos between 1997 and 2001. As a freshman, she was accepted to the team. In 1999, she achieved the 7th fastest time in school history for 1650 freestyle. In her senior and junior years, she was a Gauchos team captain. She was enrolled in the U.S. National Team and won a silver medal at the 2000 World Life Saving Championships.
Hogan qualified for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro for canoe sprinting and was the first from the U.S. national team to do so. She qualified at Lake Lanier near Atlanta, which was the site used for the 1996 Summer Olympics.
