Madeeha Gauhar was born in 1956 in Karachi, Pakistan. She graduated with a Master of Arts in English Literature and then moved to England, where she received a second master’s degree in theater sciences at the University of London.

Ajoka performed the Burqavaganza (Burqavaganza) in 2007, which was directed and written by Gauhar. This play caused a lot of controversy. Burka-clad actors acted out themes such as sexual discrimination, intolerance, and fanaticism. The piece seemed innocent from a Western perspective. It was an innocuous performance about the hypocrisy of corruption-soaked societies. However, in her country, members of Parliament demanded a ban on the performance and the Minister for Culture threatened with sanctions if the stage play was continued. As per threat, the ban was finally imposed on the stage play. However, non-governmental organizations and women’s rights activists translated the play into English and staged international performances in support of Ajoka.

She was awarded the Prince Claus Award of the Netherlands in 2006. She was awarded the International Theatre Pasta Award in 2007.

It featured social themes in theatres, streets, and public places. She performed all over Asia and Europe with Ajoka Theater.

After her studies were completed in 1983, she returned home to her homeland and settled in Lahore. Gauhar and Shahid Nadeem, her husband, founded Ajoka Theatre, an important theater group in the city, in 1984. Ajoka (English : Current) is based on the oral tradition passed down by Nautanki, Bhand, and created a strong base in the region that borders the province of Punjab. Gauhar didn’t limit herself to traditional Western theatre techniques despite her education in China and the UK. She aimed to combine authentic Pakistani elements and contemporary sentiments. Gauhar performed with Ajoka in Pakistan and later in many other countries. The troupe performed in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and several other European countries.

Madeeha Gauhar died in Lahore, Pakistan, on 25 April 2018 at the age of 61 after a three-year illness with cancer. Madeeha Gauhar tried to promote peace between India and Pakistan and tirelessly campaigned for it. She also was widely considered as one of Pakistan’s leading women’s rights activists. Madeeha Gauhar’s Ajoka Theater’s plays were frequently based on social and human rights issues – for example female literacy, honour killings, religious extremism.
