Maciej Lewenstein is one of the most popular and richest Physicist who was born on September 21, 1955 in Warsaw, Masovian Voivodeship, Poland. Maciej Lwenstein was born 21.09.1955. In 1978, he graduated from the Institute for Theoretical Physics of Warsaw University with his diploma thesis on the upperradiance phenomenon. He was directed by Prof. Kazimierz Rzazewski [pl]. After a year as a scientist assistant at ITP of Warsaw University he joined the Centre for Theoretical Physics of Polish Academy of Sciences Warsaw (CFT) in 1979. This Centre was founded by Prof. I. Bialynicki- Birula. He began his PhD studies at CFT on the applications of functional integration methods to quantum optics. He was a DAAD stipend holder in 1981 at Essen University. He completed his thesis in 1983 under the joint supervision of Prof. F. Haake. The University awarded him summa cum laude as well as the Prize. He spent the years 1984-1986 as a long-term postdoctoral fellow at Essen University, where he worked on statistical physics for disordered systems. He returned to Poland in 1984 and became a CFT faculty member. In 1986, he was habilitated at the Institute of Physics in Warsaw. Lewenstein was habilitated in cavity quantum electrodynamics, and intense laser-matter interaction.

He is a reviewer for some of the most prestigious journals, such as Science, Nature, and Nature Physics. From 1997 to 2003, he was the Division Associate Editor for Physical Review Letters. He serves on the editorial boards of “Open Systems and Information Dynamics” and “Reports on Progress in Physics”. In 2004-2006, he was Chairman of the Quantum Optics and Photonics Division at the German Physical Society. He has taught and lectured all aspects of theoretical physics and has overseen 17 Diploma and 29 Doctoral theses at different institutions. Over 40 post-docs have been supervised by him. He also provides review and evaluator services for several national and foreign research funding agencies (EU and NSF, EPSRC and Royal Society, DFG and AvH Foundations, as well as their counterparts in Australia and Israel). Various Universities and Research Institutions.

1995 was his first year at the SPAM CEA Saclay. He spent the next 3.5 years splitting his interests between ultra-intense light-matter interactions, attosecond physics and physics with ultra-cold gasses. He was made a full professor at Leibniz University Hannover in 1998, and he continued there until 2005. He moved to Spain in 2005 to become an ICREA professor and lead the quantum optics group at the Institut de Ciencies Fotoniques, Castelldefels.

Maciej Lewenstein, born September 21, 1955 in Warsaw, is a Polish theoretical physicist. He is currently an ICREA Professor at ICFO – The Institute of Photonic Sciences near Barcelona. Several national and international prizes were awarded to him for his 2 books. His other passion, aside from quantum physics, is jazz music. Over 9000 records and compact discs are part of his collection.

After being habilitated, he worked for three years as a research associate at Harvard University with Nobel laureate Roy J. Glauber. He continued his collaborations with Prof. R. Glauber (Eugene) and Prof. T. Mossberg in the early nineties on quantum optics for dielectric media, and cavity quantum electrodynamics. His interdisciplinarity in physics and social sciences led him to become an associate member of the Institute of Social Sciences at Warsaw University (ISS). He also developed collaborations with Profs. A Nowak (ISS/Boca Raton). He spent six months on sabbatical in 1992 at the Service de Photons, Atomes et Molecules of the Commisariat a l’Energie Atomique, Saclay. He began his studies on the foundations and harmonic generation of attosecond physics at this institution with Prof. A. L’Huillier. He was a Visiting Fellow at the Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics at Boulder for a year in

  1. There he continued his work on attosecond physics and initiated his interest in quantum information and physics of ultracold atoms. He also ran a joint BoseEinstein Condensation seminar with Profs. P. Zoller (Nobel 2001). He spent six months in 1994 at the Institute for Theoretical Atomic and Molecular Physics, Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. There he continued his studies on ultra-cold gases with R. Glauber.

In 2004 he became a Fellow of the American Physical Society and in 2007 he has obtained the Alexander von Humboldt Research Prize. In 2008 he became a recipient of the ERC Advanced Grant QUGATUA. In 2010 he obtained the Prize of the Joachim Herz Foundation of University of Hamburg. In 2011 he received the Prize of the Foundation for Polish Science, in 2013, Gutenberg Prize of University of Mainz, EPS Prize of the Quantum Optics and Electronics Division, and the second advanced ERC Advanced Grant OSYRIS. He was invited to the most prestigious conferences of his research area (Nobel Symposium, Bi-annual Bose Einstein Conference, International Atomic Physics Conference, APS and DFG Annual Meetings). He has organized over 30 international meetings and conferences.
