O’Grady was a Minneapolis native. O’Grady attended Santa Monica Junior College, Santa Monica, California and became a professional in 1972. After 17 unsuccessful attempts to qualify through Q School, he finally received his tour card. He legally changed his name from Phil McGleno, to Phillip McClelland O’Grady, then to Mac O’Grady. O’Grady won 2 events on the PGA Tour. O’Grady won the 1986 Canon Sammy Davis Jr./Greater Hartford Open. His second and final win was at the MONY Tournament Of Champions a year later. This win pushed him into the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking. He was best placed in majors with a T-9 at 1987 U.S. Open. O’Grady was a PGA Tour player and had 18 top-10 finishes. O’Grady quit the PGA Tour in 1989 due to back problems.
O’Grady and a female volunteer at the 1984 USF&G Classic got into an argument. O’Grady was eventually fined $500 and the fine was deducted from the winnings of the 1985 Bob Hope Desert Classic. Soon after, O’Grady began a series verbal attacks on Tour Commissioner Deane Beeman. O’Grady once said that “Deane beman is a thief” and was given a $5,000 fine. He was also suspended for six events in 1986 for conduct unbecoming a professional golfer.
