Maarten Arthur “Maarty” Leunen, born September 3, 1985, is an American professional basketball player who plays for Fortitudo Bologna in the Italian Serie A2. He was a power forward at the University of Oregon and averaged 9.9 points per games.
After being drafted by Houston Rockets, Leunen signed for the Turkish League team Darussafaka. This is associated with the large Turkish club Efes Pilsen. He joined Pallacanestro Cantu, an Italian League club in July 2009. He signed a one year deal with German club ratiopharm Ulm in July 2014.
On January 22, 2016, Leunen’s draft rights were traded to the Los Angeles Clippers in exchange for Josh Smith, the draft rights to Serhiy Lishchuk and cash considerations.
On August 1, 2018, Leunen’s draft rights were traded back to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Chinanu Onuaku with the 2020 second-round pick and cash considerations.
The Houston Rockets drafted Leunen with the 54th pick in 2008 NBA draft. However, he didn’t sign with them. He was invited to join the Rockets’ summer team in 2009 Las Vegas Summer League a year later.

Before arriving at the University of Oregon Leunen was a star at Redmond High School, Redmond, Oregon. Redmond won the 2003 state championship when Leunen was the leader. They beat Hillsboro High School by 50 to 47 at Portland’s Memorial Coliseum. Redmond lost to South Salem High School 54 to 43 at Eugene’s McArthur Court in 2004. In 2004, Leunen was named Gatorade’s state player of year. Rivals.com ranked Leunen as the 14th most powerful forward prospect. He chose Oregon over Gonzaga University and UCLA, among others.
After making solid contributions as a sophomore and freshman for the Ducks’, Leunen was one of the most crucial pieces to Oregon’s 2006-2007 campaign. Leunen was often matched up with taller, more experienced opponents in the Ducks’ four guard offense. All season, opponents were frustrated by Leunen’s post defense, rebounding, and offensive versatility (such as his ability to shoot three and run the floor). Leunen earned All-Pac-10 Honorable mention for his junior season performance.
On September 11, 2015, Leunen signed with Sidigas Avellino of the Italian Serie A.
