Michael Leon Carr, born January 9, 1951, is an American former professional basketball player. He was a former head coach and general manager of the Boston Celtics. His two-season coaching tenure with the Celtics saw him post a record of 48 wins, 116 losses and set a new career record.
Carr was later appointed General Manager of Celtics in 1994. Later, he was named the coach for both 1995-96-97 and 1996-97 seasons. The Celtics’ last year under his leadership saw them record their worst season in history. They lost 67 and won just 15 games. This was in an effort to strengthen the draft position and prepare the team for a return under Rick Pitino, a renowned college coach. Pitino replaced him at the conclusion of the season, but was unable restore the team’s glory days under Carr. He was named the Celtics’ Director for Corporate Development after the 1997 season.
His best-known feat is the steal and dunk in overtime of Game 4 in the 1984 NBA Finals against the Lakers in Los Angeles. This sealed Boston’s victory and earned them another title. He is also known for his habit of waving a towel in crucial situations to help the Celtics.

Carr graduated from Guilford College and was then selected by the Kentucky Colonels, American Basketball Association as the 7th pick in the 5th round 1973 NBA draft. He was released after being cut by the Colonels in camp. Carr played the following season in Israel for the American-owned Israel Sabras in a short-lived European Professional Basketball League. He was awarded Most Valuable Player for leading his team to the title, leading the league’s scoring and coming in second in rebounding.
Carr was a member of the 1975-76 ABA team, scoring 12.2 points per game and grabbing 6.2 rebounds. He was also named to the ABA All-Rookie Team. The Spirits of St. Louis was one of two ABA teams that didn’t join the NBA after the ABA-NBA merger. Carr became a member of Detroit Pistons in 1976 to 1979. Carr was selected to the All-Defense Second Team in 1979 and led the league’s steals. The rebuilding Boston Celtics signed Carr as a free agent. Dick Vitale, the Pistons’ coach, responded that “we just had to have the heart and soul taken from our team.” After finishing at the bottom of the NBA standings the previous season, the Celtics’ Carr acquisition was one among four major additions that immediately propelled them back to the top. Carr played a key role in helping the Celtics beat the Philadelphia 76ers in 1981 Eastern Conference Finals. This was Boston’s 14th NBA title. Carr played for the Celtics from 1985 to 1985 and averaged 9.7 points per game.
