Sumanthiran was born in Inuvil, northern Ceylon on 9 February 1964. His family is from the Vadamarachchi area of the Jaffna Peninsula – his father comes from Karaveddy, and his mother from Kudathanai. His grandfathers were both teachers in Vadamarachchi. Sumanthiran was born in Colombo, and attended Royal College, Colombo. He graduated with a B.Sc. from the University of Madras after leaving school. He also holds a degree in physics. After graduating from Sri Lanka Law College, he became an advocate.

After the 2010 parliamentary elections, Sumanthiran was elected as the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) National List Member in the Sri Lankan parliament. He was elected Illankai Tamil Arasu Kachchi (ITAK’s) Secretary for Legal and Foreign Affairs in May 2012. In September 2014, he was appointed one of ITAK’s Assistant Secretaries. Sumanthiran was one the TNA’s candidates for Jaffna District in the 2015 parliamentary elections. He was elected to Parliament and re-entered it.

Sumanthiran is a top-ranking constitutional and human rights lawyer in Sri Lanka. In 2001, Sumanthiran received an LLM in internet and electronic law at Monash University. In 2017, he was appointed President’s Counsel.

Mathiaparanan Ibrahim Sumanthiran (Tamil mtiyaaprnm aapirkaam sumntirnnn – born 9 February 1964; also known as M. A. Sumanthiran), is a Sri Lankan Tamil politician, lawyer, and Member of Parliament.

Sumanthiran was admitted to the bar in 1991. Sumanthiran began practicing law in Colombo in 1991, where he appeared in civil litigation cases at the supreme, commercial high, and district courts. He was instrumental in the privatization of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Lanka Marine Services privatization and the closing of Pramuka Bank. A number of fundamental rights cases have been brought before him. He also has judicial reviews of legislative and executive actions, including the imposition of a levy on water and the establishment of a revenue authority. He successfully challenged the anti-conversion bill, which was rejected by the courts. This prevented the expulsion of Tamils from Colombo. He also represented petitioners against the 18th and 19th proposed amendments to the constitution. These were deemed unconstitutional by a two-thirds majority of Parliamentarians and a referendum. He has been involved in a variety of cases of public interest, including the ongoing battle by the Valikamam North High Security Zone residents to reclaim their land from the Sri Lankan army. He was harassed, threatened and called “traitors with black coats” by the Sri Lankan military.

Four Ex-LTTE members were arrested in 2017 for allegedly plotting to assassinate Sumanthiran. They were accused of planning to use claymore mines on the Soranpatru-Thaalayady road on two occasions – December 12, 2016 and January 13, 2017. It is believed overseas LTTE faction headed by the Norway- based Perinbanayagam Sivaparan alias Nediyavan. As a result the National Security Council led by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe expressed concern and increased security to Sumanthiran.
