Lynne Brown, born 26 September 1961, is a South African politician. She is a former Minister for Public Enterprises and was the Premier of Western Cape Province. She was born in Cape Town, and grew up on Mitchell’s Plain. After Ebrahim Rasool’s resignation in July 2008, she was elected Premier of the Western Cape. She was previously Minister for Economic Development and Tourism. She is a member and elected member of the National Executive Committee of the African National Congress in 2007 and 2012. She is also from a coloured family like her predecessor Ebrahim Rashool. She is the fourth coloured premier in the Western Cape and the second from Africa National Congress.
She resigned from her position as ANC member of parliament on 1 March 2018.
In 2009, the ANC lost control of the province. The Democratic Alliance won 22 of 42 seats in Provincial Parliament. Brown was replaced by Helen Zille, DA’s premier candidate. From 2009 to May 2014, she served as the Leader of the ANC Opposition. In May 2014, former President Jacob Zuma appointed her as Minister of Public Enterprises.

Brown was the Mitchell’s Plain Youth Congress’s chairperson in 1979. She was also a member the United Women’s Organisation (1979-1985). From 1985 to 1990 she was a member the United Women’s Congress, first serving as an Education Officer, then as the Provincial Secretary. From its inception in 1983 to its dissolution, she was involved with the United Democratic Front as a member its Finance Committee.
Brown joined the ANC in 1988 and was elected to the Provincial Executive Committee in 1999. Since 1990, she has been the Western Cape Provincial Secretary for the ANC Women’s League. After her teaching career, she continued to be involved in education. She was a member of the National Literacy Project’s board and is currently an Extramural Education Project board member. In 1990, she was the initiator and director of Women’s College. She was elected an ANC member of the Western Cape Provincial Legislature in 1994 and 1999. She chaired the standing committees for Community Services and Health and Welfare and was Chief Whip and ANC Whip in the legislature. In 1999, she was the ANC’s candidate for mayor of Cape Town. She also served as the provincial minister (MEC) in finance, economic development, and tourism until her elevation into the office of Premier in 2008
As of February 2018 she was removed from the Cabinet of President Cyril Ramaphosa, being succeeded by Pravin Gordhan.
