In September 2018, Ruane published a memoir entitled People Like Me. The memoir reached number one on the Irish paperback non-fiction charts and won the 2018 An Post Irish Book Award for best non-fiction.
She completed a foundation program in 2012 to enable her to access a Trinity College Dublin (TCD) degree program. She also studied philosophy and politics. After representing student parents for a year on the Trinity College Dublin Students Union executive, she was elected the union’s president on February 12, 2015. This election received national attention. She was actively involved in the Fossil Fuel Divestment Campaign at TCD and the campaign to repeal The Eighth Amendment.

Lynn Ruane (/’ lI n’ r u/ ; 20 October 1984), is an Irish politician. She has been an independent senator for the University of Dublin constituency of Seanad Eireann starting April 2016. From 2015 to 2016, she was President of Trinity College Dublin Students’ Union.
Ruane declared her intention to run for the 2016 Seanad election as an independent candidate in the University of Dublin constituency in December 2015. On the 15th and last count she was elected to represent Trinity graduates at the Oireachtas. She defeated incumbent Sean Barrett. She was reelected at the 2020 Irish Seanad elections, attaining the quota on eighth count.
Miriam Lord of The Irish Times named Ruane her 2016 Senator of the Year.
