Lynn Davis, born July 12, 1958, is an American singer-songwriter, musician, record producer, and musician. After joining The George Duke Band in 1978, she rose to fame. She sang lead vocals for some of the biggest hits, including “I Want You For Myself”, “Party Down”, “Reach Out”, and “Party Down”. George Duke, Epic Records mentor and musician, guided Davis to continue booking success. He provided background vocals and wrote songs for many singers, including Tracie Spencer and La Toya Jack, Patrice Rushen and Anita Baker.

Lynn joined The Gene Dunlap Band in 1983. Their first album, Tired of Being A Nice Guy, was released. Lynn was back with the George Duke Band, and they released Guardian Of The Light. Lynn toured later with the George Duke Band on their worldwide tour. The George Duke Band recorded their live album, Live in Tokyo, Japan 1983. This was also available on DVD. Lynn was a backup singer on Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing Tour later that year. Sheila E., a fellow George Duke Band member, and Peter Michael Escovedo were also on the tour. Lynn continued to sing background vocals for Duke’s following albums: “Rendezvous” (1984), “Super Keyboards” (1984), and “Thief in the Night” (1985).

In 1987, Lynn was introduced to uprising Japanese singer Toshinobu Kubota, who was impressed with her stage performance during the Japan Aid 2nd Festival in October 1987. Later that year, Lynn re-located to Japan and began recording regularly with Kubota and eventually became a backup singer for him during his “I Need Your Funky Thang Tour”. In the same year, Lynn met Japanese singer/musician Hiroshi Satoh. Satoh produced a song for Lynn called “Lady of the Nile” and a duet song with Satoh entitled “Together”, which appeared on his album Future File.

In 1988, she was featured on Kubota’s single “Indigo Waltz” from his third album Such A Funky Thang!. In the same year, Lynn returned to America and co- wrote as well as produced songs for Gary Taylor, Paul Jackson, Jr., Alfonz Jones, Anita Baker, Jeffrey Osborne, Evelyn “Champagne” King, Stacy Lattisaw, Howard Hewett, Deniece Williams, and many other singers. She also joined Chaka Khan for her European Tour.

Lynn started contributing background vocals to La Toya Jackson’s debut album in 1980. She also began writing songs for Patrice Rouen’s album Posh that year. Lynn is also featured vocalist on the album, as well as guest, for “This Is all I Really Know”, which she wrote for Rushen. Davis briefly joined Twennynine, where she contributed vocals to their debut album Best of Friends. Davis was present when the band performed on American Bandstand. Lynn recorded a cover of Earth, Wind, and Fire’s hit song After the Love Has Gone in 1981 for Stanley Turrentine’s album Tender Togetherness. She also sang background vocals on Syreeta Wright’s album Set My Love in Motion, and Greg Phillinganes’s album Significant Gains. She recorded background vocals in late 1981 for Billy Preston & Syreeta’s duet album Billy Preston & Syreeta. Lynn appeared on Jeffrey Osborne’s 1982 debut single, “I Really Don’t Need No Light”. This song was released on his self-titled debut album. Lynn is also a background singer on Osborne’s songs “Ain’t Nothin’ Missin’” and “Baby”, both of which are also included on his album. Lynn provided background vocals again that year and also wrote songs for Patrice Rushen, which appeared on Straight from the Heart.

Lynn Blythe Davis was the daughter of Adeline Davis (nee Livingston), and Thomas Davis (a Baptist minister at a local congregation). Lynn attended Narbonne High School, Los Angeles, California. There she took dance classes. When she started performing in school talent shows, Lynn discovered her singing talent. Lynn, along with her friends, won a school talent competition at sixteen. Lynn was the featured singer on the single “I Want You For Myself”, released on George Duke’s album Master of the Game in mid-1979. The single reached number 23 on Billboard’s Hot R&B and Hot Dance Club Songs charts. Lynn started providing background vocals to Patrice Rushen in the same year. She met Patrice during sessions with Lalo Schifrin. These songs were included on Rushen’s smash album Pizzazz.

In 1985, she recorded two songs that would appear on Rodney Franklin’s album Marathon; “Stay On in the Groove” and a duet song “Love Is the Answer” with Darryl Coley. In 1986, Lynn recorded two songs “The First Time” and “It’s Your Turn”, which were featured in the film Flying: Dream To Believe. In 1987, George Duke formed a R&B group called “101 North”, which Lynn was briefly apart of along with fellow George Duke Band members Josie James, Napoleon Murphy Brock, and Carl Carwell. The group released their self-titled debut album in August 1987.
