Lydia Cheromei, a Kenyan-born athlete was born in Baringo District on 15 May 1977. She is a specialist in long-distance running. At thirteen, she won the junior race at IAAF World Cross Country Championships. After a few years of being away from competition due to burnout, she returned in the mid-nineties and made an appearance at Atlanta Olympics 1996.
Cheromei was a successful road racer, winning the Saint Silvester Road Race. She also came sixth at the 2000 Summer Olympics. Due to personal problems, she did not participate in 2001-2004 and was unable to compete for two more years after receiving a positive doping screen in 2006.
She had a successful marathon debut by winning the 2008 Amsterdam Marathon and timing 2.25.27. In the 2009 Rotterdam Marathon she finished 2nd behind Nailya Yulamanova of Russia.
Cheromei won the 2008 Rotterdam Half Marathon with a course record of 68:35; the previous record (69:13) had been set by herself in 2004 when she also won the event.
Cheromei won three times at the Saint Silvester Road Race, which is held every year in Brazil. She ran 47:02 in the 2004 Zevenheuvelenloop, which was the second-best 15K time.

Cheromei, aged 13, was a bronze medalist at World Junior Championships. She also won the junior category at the World Cross Country Championships 1991. She was a Kenyan trial winner for the 1991 World Championships. However, she was too young to be able to compete in Tokyo. She was at that time coached in Singore Girls Secondary School by Sister Christine Heverin.
Between 1994 and 1997, she was almost inactive due to the fact that her young runner had apparently died. After a brief recovery, she took a three-year hiatus until 2004, when she was unable to run due to personal issues.
In 2006 Cheromei was found guilty of clomiphene doping. The sample was delivered on 24 February 2005 in an out-of-competition test in Eldoret. She received an IAAF suspension from May 2005 to May 2007. She claimed she was taking the substance under the prescription of her doctor as she was undergoing fertility treatment at the time of testing. The ban remained as she did not inform the relevant authorities of the information.
