When he was seven years of age, he started playing Australian rules football for the Rye Football Club. As a full- forward, he played senior football at Rosebud Football Club. He was nineteen years old when he was playing Rosebud Football Club against Hastings Football Club. His neck was broken after he was caught between a teammate or an opposing player. Because of paralysis, he is paraplegic and must use a wheelchair. He is unable to use his hands or fingers. He was a participant in many sports before his accident. He continued to pursue angling after his accident. He resides in Boneo (Victoria) as of 2012.
Cain was chosen to represent Australia in the 2012 Summer Paralympics in the Mixed R5-10m Rifle Standing–SH2 and Mixed R4-10m Rifle Standing–SH2 shooting events. He finished 27th in standing and 28th in prone events, but he didn’t medal.
Most recently Cain had represented Australia in the 2016 Rio Paralympics. He competed in the Mixed 10 m air rifle standing SH2 and the Mixed 10 m air rifle prone SH2. Cain did not medal, placing 26th in the standing event and 33rd in the prone event.
Cain is a SH2-classified shooter who competes in the 10m air rifle pende and 10m air rifle standing events. Since 2008, he has been a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder and is a member of Springvale Range Club. Miro Sipek is his coach, both as an individual and on the national team.

Luke Cain, born 3 February 1980, is an Australian SH2-classified shooter. He became paraplegic in an accident while playing Australian Rules Football. Because the sport was suitable for him, he began competing in 2007. Since 2008, he has been a Victorian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. In 2009, he represented Australia at the World Cup in South Korea. He also represented Australia at two Paralympic Games, including the 2016 Rio Paralympics.
Cain began competing in 2007 and was selected for the Australian national team that year. He won a bronze, silver, and gold medal during Australia’s 2009 national series, the Australia Cup. This invitation-only series is for top shooters in Australia. He made his international debut in 2009 at the ISSF World Cup in South Korea, where he represented Australia’s national team. In early 2010, he was searching for a sponsor to help with the costs of his international competitions. At the 2010 World Cup, he set a personal record of 598 from 600 in the SH-2 prone-air event. He then set a new personal record when he shot 599 in the same event at France’s 2010 World Cup. At the 2010 Oceania Shooting Federation Continental Championship, he was first. He won the SH-2 prone air event at the 2010 IPC Shooting World Championships, Zagreb. His world record score of 600 points was a perfect score. He finished second in the 10m air rifle prone event at the 2011 Great Britain International. He finished fourth in the R5 Air Rifle Prone competition at the United States- hosted International Paralympic Committee World Cup 2011. He was paired with Bradley Mark and Jason Maroney to win a team gold medal. He trained six days per week in 2012 and was able to train up to six times a week. He finished second at the Australian nationals in the prone event, behind Michael Johnson from New Zealand, and third in standing, behind Johnson and Bradley Marks.
As a youngster, Cain hunted with his father and cousin. He took up the sport of shooting because it was one of the few available to people with his physical limitations. As of 2012, he was sponsored by Miall’s Gun Shop of Frankston, Victoria, who provided him with competition gear including cleaning supplies, a rifle case and a rifle. He holds two world records, one in the individual 600–600 R4 prone event, and another in the R4 10-metre standing event.
