Zingales, in A Capitalism for the People (2012): Recapturing the Lost Genoise of American Prosperity (2012), “suggests” that the channeling of populist anger can reenergize the power of competition as well as reverse the trend towards a crony system”.
In 2018, Zingales caused controversy when he invited Steve Bannon, former White House Chief Strategist, to debate globalization at the University of Chicago against an undecided expert in the subject. Students and faculty protested the decision, given Bannon’s history of controversial statements.
Zingales participated in NPR’s ‘No-Brainer Economic Platform’ project in July 2012. A six-part reform plan was supported by Zingales. It included eliminating all American income, payroll, and corporate taxes, as well as ending the war on drugs, and replacing it with a broad consumption tax, including taxing previously illegal substances.
