He is currently the Prime Minister for Romania. He is the leader of the National Liberal Party, and was Minister of Transport in the second Calin Popescu–Tariceanu cabinet from April 2007 to Dec 2008. From 2008 to 2016, he was also a member of Romania’s Chamber of Deputies in Bucharest.
After the fall of Viorica Dancinga’s government in October 2019, President Klaus Iohannis appointed Orban as Prime Minister. His cabinet was approved by parliament the month after, with 240 legislators voting in favor of it, seven more than required. His government was overthrown in February 2020 by a no confidence motion, which saw 261 lawmakers vote in favor. A new Orban-led cabinet was approved by parliament on a 286-23 vote. Many PNL members, including Orban, were absent because of possible exposure to the coronavirus pandemic. Given the emergency, the Social Democrats voted for the cabinet and pledged concerted resistance. PRO Romania voted against.
Orban is known for provocative statements and being a controversial figure. He was a fierce critic of Traian Basescu and called him an “imbecile” because he referred to the “imbecile” attitude of a minister during the 2008 summer floods. He also criticized the Emil Boc government that was formed of the Basescu-associated PD-L, and the Social Democrats. He referred to the former leader Mircea Geoana, the Social Democrats’ “steward”, and attacked cabinet policies on education, tourism promotion, and the financial crisis, where he predicted the government would be unable to pay salaries and pensions. He made sexist accusations when he said, “You don’t need to go through any boss to reach important public posts”, to a group consisting of PNL members from Alba County. He stated that Raluca Turcan, then a party colleague, later joined the Liberal Democratic Party, later the Democratic Liberal Party and ended up back in the National Liberal Party after Democrat Liberals merged again with the National Liberal Party), Mioara Udrea and Elena Udrea had done the same, but not Mona Musca and Norica Nicolaa Nicolaa Nicolai or Norica Nicola Nicola a Musca and Norica Nicolai. He drove in Cotroceni, December 2007 and hit a 16 year-old girl. Despite being asked by the prime minister to resign, Orban refused and prosecutors decided not to pursue criminal charges against him. However, he was fined and his license was suspended.

Orban was born in Brasov to an ethnic Hungarian mother and a Romanian father. He completed secondary education at Andrei Saguna High School, the city in 1982. Orban then went on to study industrial machinery design technology at University of Brasov. He graduated in 1988. He completed his post-graduate studies at the National School of Administration and Political Science of Bucharest in 1993. He was an engineer in Targu Secuiesc from 1988 to 1990 and then worked as one in a Brasov factory between 1990 and 1991. He wrote from 1991 to 1992 for Viitorul Romanesc. From 1992 to 1997, he was an adviser for the Liberal Party 1993, its predecessor, and the Liberal Party 1993. He held several government and agency positions between 1997 and 2001, including the Energy Policy Agency and Disabled Persons Directorate. The Public Information Department, National Public Employee Agency, National Centre for Communications and Public Relations Specialisation, and the Public Information Department. He was also active in Children, the Light of the World Foundation and has done consulting work.
From 1992 to 1996, Orban was a Sector 3 councillor. In 1992, he was elected as a local councillor in Sector 1. However, he resigned. He was a member of the executive committee for the Liberal Party 1993. After the former party’s merger, he joined the PNL’s National Council in 1998. He was a member of the PNL’s permanent central board from 2001 to 2002 and joined the party’s committee on public administration in 2002. Since November 2002, he has been the Bucharest chapter’s leader. He was also the Deputy Mayor of Bucharest from July 2004 until April 2007. After a cabinet reshuffle he was appointed Transport Minister. He served until the party’s defeat in 2008, when he won a seat for his own constituency. He was also a minister and ran for mayor of Bucharest in 2008’s local elections. He finished in fourth with 11.4%. Orban was elected vice president of the party in March 2009. This occurred concurrently with Crin Antonescu’s rise to the PNL presidency. Alina Gorghiu defeated Orban on a 47-28 basis. Orban was a candidate for the June 2016 mayoral race in Bucharest. However, two months prior to the election, he withdrew from both the race and his PNL and Chamber positions after being placed under investigation of the National Anticorruption Directorate. In 2016, he was not a candidate. Orban was acquitted by the High Court of Cassation and Justice on January 2017 for influence peddling. He announced his candidacy to lead the PNL in January 2017. He defeated Cristian Busoi with a margin of 78-21.
