Ludmila Engquist is one of the most popular and richest Bobsledder who was born on April 21, 1964 in Tambov Oblast, Russia. Ludmila Viktorovna Engquist (nee Leonova (Russian: Liudmila Viktorovna Narozhilenko- Leonova ). Formerly Narozhilenko, she was born 21 April 1964. She competed in the 100m hurdles. She represented the Soviet Union (until 1991), Russia (1992) and Sweden (1996). She is the 1996 Olympic champion, and the 1991 and 1997 World champions in the 100m hurdles. Her 1992 world record time of 12.26 seconds places her fourth on the all-time world list. She also holds the world record for 60m hurdles, with 7.69 seconds (1990).
After a distinguished career in athletics, she decided to retire from running and to be the first woman to win both gold medals at the Summer and Winter Olympics. She did this by participating in and winning the inaugural 2-woman bobsleigh competition at the 2002 Winter Olympics. She was convicted of using banned drugs in late 2001 and banned from competing for two years. Her admission of drug use, though only during the recent part of her bobsleigh effort, made her a very controversial person in Sweden and considering that she had tested positive for banned drugs once before, during her days as a Soviet runner, and had sustained a ban (which was appealed and lifted after a while) some alleged that she had been using performance-enhancing substances regularly all the time, a claim for which there is no evidence. Engquist was released from the penalty in December 2003.
Engquist was diagnosed in 1999 with breast cancer. She stopped receiving chemotherapy after four treatments, as she didn’t want to have the drugs interfere with her athletic career.
