In late 1996, she set a new world record for qualifying and won silver in the final against Marion Clignet at the World Championships in Manchester.

At the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur she was beaten in her individual pursuit semi-final ride after which she launched a public verbal tirade against team management and Charlie Walsh, suggesting that her prospects had been sabotaged by being forced to use unfamiliar pedals. The outburst saw her sent home, unable to compete in the ride-off for bronze. Tyler-Sharman is the only Australian athlete ever sent home from a Commonwealth Games meet.

In the 1998 World Championships in Bordeaux she posted the fastest time in qualifying for the pursuit and in the final managed a time of 3:35.25 becoming the world champion.

Charlie Walsh, national coach, convinced her to switch to endurance track events full-time in December 1995. A severe asthma attack in the points race caused her to miss out on a good result at the February 1996 Perth national titles. In the 3000m individual pursuit, she was defeated by Kathy Watt.

Tyler was a talented sportswoman as a junior. She specialized in swimming at junior high school, and then later triathlons. While living in Florida, she moved to velodrome events in 1988. She lived in New South Wales, where she began training and racing in Australia in 1990. She married Martin Vinnicombe, a track rider. They were both training at Trexlertown Velodrome in Pennsylvania in 1991 when Canadian drug testers recorded a positive test for Martin Vinnicombe. Martin’s career was ended, but Lucy took up residency in Australia the next year and won the 10 km scratch race and the sprint at the 1993 Alice Springs national championships.

She was awarded an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship in 1994 as a sprinter. She also represented Australia at the World Championships in Sicily in fourth place. She was ninth in the individual pursuit and 19th overall in the sprint at the World championships in Colombia the following year. In May 1995, she married Graham Sharman, a Western Australian cyclist. She then moved to Western Australia.

Further national and international meets included winning the individual pursuit and time trials at the 1997 Oceania Championships in 1997, and winning a second national pursuit title. In Canada in 1998 she won pursuit and points races and she won gold in the pursuit in the World Cup in Berlin.
