Powell was responsible for Ed Miliband’s successful campaign to become Labour Party leader from May 2010 to September 2010. From September 2010 to April 2012, she was Miliband’s acting chief of staff and then deputy chief.

She was selected by the local Constituency Labour Party (CLP) in April 2012 for the 15 November 2012 Manchester Central by-election defeating local councillors Mike Amesbury and Rosa Battle and the London councillor Patrick Vernon. The by-election was triggered by Tony Lloyd who stepped down as its MP to contest the 2012 England and Wales Police and Crime Commissioner elections for Greater Manchester Police area.

She is married to James Williamson, an emergency medicine doctor, and has three children – a step-son, daughter and a son who was born on 27 May 2013.

In April 2007, she was elected Prospective Parliamentary candidate for Manchester Withington. At the 2010 general election, she was unsuccessful in defeating John Leech, the incumbent Liberal Democrat.

After having worked as an assistant to Beverley Hughes MP at Millbank Tower’s Labour Party Headquarters during 1997’s general election campaign, Powell started her career in parliamentary politics.

She was initially a member of the pro-Euro pressure group Britain in Europe (BiE) in a role in public relations and then as the head of regional campaigning. Simon Buckby was later replaced by her as Campaign Director at BiE. She worked alongside Nick Clegg, Neil Kinnock and Chris Patten. She worked for the non-departmental quango NESTA (the National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts), first in a role in public affairs, and then to create and manage the Manchester Innovation Fund.
