Lucy Gichuhi is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on September 23, 1962 in Nyeri, Kenya. Lucy Muringo Gichuhi, /g I’tS u:i/ ; nee Munyiri, was an Australian politician. She served as a senator for South Australia between 2017 and 2019. Born in Kenya, she worked as an accountant before becoming a politician. After a Court of Disputed Returns ordered a special recount, she was declared elected to the Family First Party’s 2016 election in April 2017. The court ruled that Bob Day was not eligible to run for election. Gichuhi was originally an independent senator after refusing membership to the Family First Party merging into Australian Conservatives. In February 2018, she joined the Liberal Party, but was unsuccessful in winning re-election at 2019’s federal election.

She is an outspoken opponent to same-sex marriage and said that she would vote no against any bill regardless of the outcome of the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey. Gichuhi was among twelve senators who voted no on the bill when it was passed in the Senate.

Before her election, a question was raised in the court about Gichuhi’s eligibility on citizenship grounds. However this was not an issue as Kenya did not allow dual citizenship and she became an Australian citizen in July 2001, two years after her arrival in 1999. The Constitution of Kenya that was current at the time meant that any person who voluntarily applied for the citizenship elsewhere lost his or her Kenyan citizenship. Since 2010, Kenya has allowed dual citizenship; however, people who had lost their citizenship under the old law are required to apply if they wish to regain it. The High Court rejected the Australian Labor Party’s challenge to her eligibility. Later, Parliament changed the retroactive date of her term to 19 April 2017, when her eligibility was finally decided.

In January 2018, Gichuhi visited Kenya and was the guest on television talk show Jeff Koinange Live hosted by Jeff Koinange on Citizen TV. In June 2018, a clip from this interview was widely reported in Australia quoting that she had said that her $200,000 salary in Australia is “not a lot of money”.

Family First leader Bob Day was his party’s leading senator candidate in South Australia during the election of 2 July 2016. Gichuhi was the second and last (a ticket has the advantage of attracting votes above the line which is how most electors cast their ballots–but it requires a minimum of two candidates). Below the line, Day received 5,495 votes while Gichuhi received 152. The party received 24,817 votes.

She then moved to Nairobi, where she studied accounting at the University of Nairobi. Before moving to South Australia with her husband William, she was an accountant in various firms. She was an accountant at Ernst and Young and worked in the South Australian Auditor General’s department, developing programs for international students and migrants. In 2015, she received a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of South Australia. Before her appointment to Senate, she worked as a volunteer lawyer for Women’s Legal Service.

Day quit on November 1, 2016, following the collapse of his homebuilding company. He was retroactively disqualified from office on April 5, 2017 because he had an indirect interest in a property where the Commonwealth was renting out his Commonwealth-funded electorate offices. The Australian Electoral Commission conducted a special recount of South Australian Senate votes at the direction of the High Court. This was to result in Gichuhi taking over for Day. Day was exempted and all Family First votes above that line went to Gichuhi. She was then elected in the recount. In common with all 2016 Senators, her election and term date back to 1 July 2016. Her term ended on 30 June 2019, and she was elected to continue Day’s term. Day’s term was extended to three years, rather than the usual six, due to the 2016 election being a double dissolve.

On 25 April 2017, Family First announced it was merging with the Australian Conservatives party founded by Cory Bernardi. Gichuhi told the leaders of both parties that she had no intention of joining the Conservatives, and would sit as an Independent when Family First was disbanded. The Senate counted her as part of the Family First Party up to 3 May 2017 and as an Independent from that date up to 1 February 2018.
