Lucius Banda is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on August 17, 1970 in Malawi. Lucius Banda is a well-known Malawian music icon. He was born in Sosola Village, Group Village headman Kapalamula, and Traditional Authority Nsamala, Balaka District, on 17 August 1970. He started singing at the age of thirteen with his brother Paul Banda, leader of Alleluya Band. In 1985, he was the first to appear on stage with his brother’s Alleluya Band.

He was an MP representing Balaka North until August 2006. However, he was removed from office after he was found guilty of falsifying academic qualifications. After being arrested, he was sentenced to 21 month hard labor in Zomba prison. He was released three months later, after two appeals. Cell 51 Maximum was the result of this experience.

Lucius has been host to many popular musicians, helping to begin the careers of Mlaka Maliro, Paul Chaphuka, Billy Kaunda, Cosi Chiwalo, Wendy Harawa, Emma Masauko, Enort Mbandambanda and Charles Nsaku. In the year 2010 he fell out of favor with the DPP led Government of the late Bingu Wa Mutharika (former President of Malawi). Malawians look to him as a mouth piece on political oppression. Meanwhile in the 2014 Tripartite Elections, Lucius Banda reclaimed his Balaka Central Constituency as Member of Parliament in which he won with a wide margin of 16,303 votes against his competitor who came second with 8,147.

After recording Take Over, Lucius Banda started his own band Zembani in 1997. He wanted to support local musicians and keep them afloat. His Zembani Music Band has promoted many Malawian artists. The Zembani Band is one of Africa’s most recognizable music groups. Millions of Africans love his music. He is known for being the voice of the poor and the unheard. His music captures the challenges faced by ordinary Malawians in terms of social, economic, and cultural issues. He was also a vocal opponent of social injustices and inequalities that are prevalent among African leaders, politicians and politicians. He was controversial for Dr. Hastings Kamuzu Banda’s government. He was the first Malawian musician who sang openly against political oppression during decades of one-party rule.
