In 1990-1, he was a University of Warwick lecturer in Philosophy. In 1990, he joined the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford and the OUCL (Oxford’s Department of Computer Science) 1999. He was a Junior Research Fellow at Wolfson College in Philosophy (1990-4), Frances Yates Fellow at the Warburg Institute (1994-95), and Research Fellow at Wolfson College in Philosophy (1994-2001). He held various lectureships at different colleges during his time in Oxford. He also held a postdoctoral research fellowship at the Department of Philosophy, University of Turin, between 1994 and 1996. He was a Markle Foundation Senior Research Fellow in Information Policy in 2001-2006 at the Programme in Comparative Media Law and Policy of Oxford University. He was Associate Professor in Logic at the Universita di Studi di Bari from 2002 to 2008. He was elected Fellow by special election of St Cross College, Oxford University in 2006. In 2006, he played squash for the university’s squash team. He was made full professor of philosophy in 2008 at the University of Hertfordshire. This gave him the opportunity to hold the newly created research chair in philosophy of Information and, since 2009 the UNESCO Chair on Information and Computer Ethics.

Floridi was born 1964 in Rome. He studied philosophy at Rome University La Sapienza, where he was initially educated as an historian of philosophy. Floridi soon became interested and completed his MA dissertation in philosophy of logic on Michael Dummett’s Anti-Realism. He received his Master of Philosophy (1989), and his PhD (1990) degrees from the University of Warwick. He worked in epistemology, philosophy of logic, and with Susan Haack, who was his PhD supervisor. Part of Floridi’s student years can be found in The Lost Painting: The Quest for a Caravaggio Masterpiece. He was called “Luciano”. He covered standard topics in analytic philosophical research in search of a better method. When tackling contemporary philosophical problems, he sought to use a heuristically strong and intellectually enriching approach. He began to disengage himself from the classical analytic philosophy during his graduate studies. He felt that the analytic movement was losing its way. He focused his efforts on pragmatism, especially Peirce, and foundationalist issues within epistemology.
Luciano Floridi is currently Professor of Philosophy and Ethics of Information and the Director of the Digital Ethics Lab at the University of Oxford. He was born 16 November 1964 in Italy. He was the founder and director of the IEG, an interdepartmental research group on the philosophy of information at the University of Oxford, and of the GPI the research Group in Philosophy of Information at the University of Hertfordshire. He was the founder and director of the SWIF, the Italian e-journal of philosophy (1995–2008). He is a former Governing Body Fellow of St Cross College, Oxford.
