Lucas Radebe is one of the most popular and richest Association Football Player who was born on April 12, 1969 in Soweto, Gauteng, South Africa. Lucas Valeriu Radebe OIS, a former professional South African footballer, was born April 12, 1969. He played as a centreback.
Radebe and Philemon “Chippa”, a South African player, made the move to Leeds United in 1994 for a transfer fee PS250,000. Radebe was not included in the deal to keep Masinga satisfied; he turned out to be a more valuable investment.
Radebe was also the captain of the South African national football team during both the 1998 FIFA World Cup and 2002 FIFA World Cup’s. South Africa failed to reach the knockout stages on both occasions; however Radebe did get on the score sheet in 2002.
Initially the move was not a success; Radebe did not agree with then Leeds manager Howard Wilkinson, and suffered injuries which prevented him for earning a regular first team place. However, when Wilkinson was replaced by George Graham, his career flourished and Radebe was made captain of the team for the 1998–99 season. Whilst he was captain, Leeds enjoyed a period of relative success; in the 1998–99 season, they finished fourth in the FA Premier League, qualifying for the UEFA Cup. During the 1999–2000 season, Leeds finished third in the Premier League and qualified for the following season’s Champions League, where they eventually reached the semi-finals. During this time, Radebe turned down the chance to move to Manchester United, A.C. Milan and Roma. Alex Ferguson commented at the time, “Everyone should be interested in Lucas.”
Radebe was the first South African player to be included in the 1992 national team. He made his international debut against Cameroon on July 7, 1992.

Radebe was the fourth child of eleven children born to Emily Radebe and Johannes Radebe, in Soweto’s Diepkloof area. From the age of 15 years, he attended the Bopasenatla Secondary school. As a precaution against the violence in Diepkloof Zone Four, his parents sent him to one the former homelands in Grade 10 Bophuthatswana. He attended Ngotwane High School in Zeerust. He joined the ICL Birds of the Bophuthatswana Soccer League. Patrick Ntsoelengoe saw him and recruited him to the Kaizer Chiefs in South Africa in 1989.
He was driving with his brother Lazarus in 1991 to get drinks for his mother. However, he was not seriously injured. Radebe’s 1994 decision to join Leeds United was partly influenced by an incident three years earlier. Radebe, his brother, one of his sister and his baby were shopping for his mother. Radebe says that they heard a gunshot while walking and didn’t pay much attention to it because in Soweto, shots are heard all the time. His left leg became limp and he felt pain in his back. Radebe was taken to the hospital, but there were no injuries. The bullet entered Radebe’s back and traveled halfway down his thigh. Although the identity of the culprit is not known, it is believed that someone hired him to shoot him instead of allowing him to switch clubs.
In 1996, he was a member of the South African team that won the African Nations Cup. This triumph, coupled with the country’s earlier victory in the Rugby World Cup helped to establish the country as a real force in the world of sport.
