Barbarossa won 1980’s Castrocaro Music Festival. He was then spotted by a producer from Fonit-Cetra, who signed him to an album contract. He was the Castrocaro winner and was eligible to compete at the 1981 San Remo Festival. There, he placed fourth with his own song, “Roma Spogliata”. He released his first self-titled album in the same year and toured with Riccardo cocciante. Barbarossa left Fonit-Cetra after the album and singles were not particularly successful. He signed with the CBS Italian division, which made the decision to make him a singles artist prior to releasing an album. He was 18th in the San Remo Festival again with “Via Margutta” in 1986. A second San Remo entry was in 1987 with “Come dentro un film” which earned him ninth place. This album was also his first for CBS that same year. His best San Remo placement was achieved in 1988 when “L’amore Rubato” came third.

RAI selected Barbarossa as the Italian Eurovision representative in 1988 with “Vivo(Ti scrivo”)” (“Alive (I write to You )”).). He was invited to the 33rd Eurovision Song Contest in Dublin on 30 April 1988. “Vivo(Ti scrivo”)” placed 12th out of 21 entries.
