Lubna Hamid Twfiq Tahtamouni, a Jordanian biologist, is well-known for her research in cancer and developmental biology. She heads the Department of Biology & Biotechnology at Hashemite University, Zarqa (Jordan). Her work on breast cancer has earned her multiple awards. She is also known for advocating for young Arab women to pursue a career in science. She was one of BBC’s 100 Women in 2016.

She was appointed head of the Hashemite University Department of Biology and Biotechnology in 2011. She was also awarded a L’Oreal-UNESCO Pan-Arab Regional Fellowship for Women in Science and an OWSD Award for Young Women Scientists From the Developing World in 2011 for her work on breast Cancer, which is responsible for 35% of all deaths in Jordan. She was inducted into the Women in Science Hall of Fame at the United States Embassy in Jordan in 2015. In 2016, she was also named as one of BBC’s 100 Women. Her research interests include the actin-binding proteins of chick embryos, breast cancer, human and sperm chromatin abnormalities and the effects of oxidative stresses on cell metabolism.

After completing her Ph.D., Tahtamouni returned home to Jordan to inspire young women in science and to show her support for the institutions that helped her move to America. She was appointed director of the Hashemite University microscopy center in 2008 after she secured funding. To increase the chances of new faculty securing funding, she also taught proposal-writing workshops. To keep up-to-date with the latest research methods, she spent summers in Australia and the United States.

Tahtamouni, the third of six siblings, was born in Irbid, northern Jordan. In an interview she said that “Jordan is very permissive when it comes to women’s education and work, but traditionally women’s priorities are pre-defined: her husband, children and household,” and noted that 71 of the 80 students in her undergraduate class were women, but only three continued into a master’s program and only one completed a Ph.D. She also encourages her students, many of whom are women from underprivileged areas of Jordan, to study abroad in order to broaden both their scientific and cultural experiences, with two of her former Master’s students doing Ph.D. work in Italy and Canada.
