Louisa Hanoune is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on April 7, 1954 in Chekfa, Algeria. Hanoune was born at Chekfa in Jijel Province. After her parents, mountain peasants from Chekfa in Jijel Province bombed her parent’s home, Hanoune fled to Annaba with her family. She was the first female member of her family to attend school. Hanoune was able to complete secondary school in Algeria thanks to the compulsory and free education system. She then went on for a Bachelor’s degree before she joined the aviation sector. Hanoune was denied by her father, who opposed the decision to study law at Annaba University. She stated that she believes it is the right to education that will change the status and representation of women in society, of which she was a part.

The Constitutional Council rejected Hanoune’s 1999 first attempt at the presidency election.

Hanoune was one of eleven candidates who nominated for the 2009 presidential election. Her platform included defending the principle of national sovereignty and denouncing the policy of liberalization and privatization of public enterprises. She won 4.22% of the vote, coming second out of six candidates, as President Abdelaziz Bouteflika won a third term with 90.24% of the votes cast in an election which was denounced as fraudulent.

In March 2010, Haroune joined other women’s-rights activists in calling for repeal of Algeria’s Family Code on grounds of its failure to provide adequate protection for females.

Louisa Hanoune, a founding member and former president of the International Workers and Peoples (January 1991), was an international leader. She was a representative at PT conferences against privatization and fought for workplace standards. She is a member of the committee of the African Committee of the International Workers and of the women workers. She was part of a coalition of unions which spoke out against the war on Iraq, including the International Confederation of Arab Trade Unions (ICU) and the International Confederation of Workers.

Louisa Hanoune, Arabic: lwyz@Hnwn ; was born 7 April 1954. She is the leader of Algeria’s Workers Party (Parti des Travailleurs – PT). She became the first woman to run as President of Algeria in 2004. Before 1988’s legalization of political parties, Hanoune was repeatedly imprisoned by government officials. After joining the Trotskyist-sponsored Social Workers Organisation in 1981, she was again imprisoned by the government after the 1988 October Riots which ended the National Liberation Front’s single-party rule. Hanoune was a prominent opponent to the government’s “eradication” policy towards Islamists during Algeria’s civil conflict of the 1990s. She signed the Sant’Egidio Platform in January 1995 with other opposition parties, including the Islamic Salvation Front (a radical Islamist party that was disintegrated by military decree). This led to the civil war.

Following the 1988 riots, Algeria adopted a pluralist structure in 1989 that made it possible for Hanoune and his Workers’ Party to be established. In 1990, the Socialist Workers Organization wreit created the Workers’ Party. Their platform focuses on the class struggle between workers, or the “exploited classes”, and owners or the “oppressors”. It is an independent party that supports the Algerian National Movement. Hanoune, who was the party’s leader and spokesperson since inception, was elected Secretary General in October 2005. Algeria had 23 parties competing in 2007’s elections.

In the 2004 presidential election she however became the first female candidate in the entire Arab world to run for president. Only six candidates were recognized by the constitutional council.
