He was born on 19 June 1973. He is most well-known for his roles as Ricky in Riki-Oh (1991), Jin Shanzhao and Ip Man 2 (2010). His other roles include those in several TVB series.
Louis is the father of one child, one daughter and one son, named Alan. They were both born from the union of his former girlfriend. He began dating JJ Jia, an actress and singer in 2012. The couple announced their engagement in November and were married in Hong Kong on January 1, 2016. They had a daughter in November 2017 called Little Rice Bowl (Xiao Fan Dou).
Fan also played Jin Shanzhao, the Northern martial artist, in 2008’s Ip Man. Donnie Yen was the Wing Chun grandmaster Ip Man. Fan’s performance as Jin Shanzhao in Ip Man earned him the nomination for Best Supporting Actor in 2009 at the 28th Hong Kong Film Awards. He played the role of Jin Shanzhao again in Ip Man 2 (2010), a sequel to Ip Man. He was a new character in The Legend Is Born: Ip Man (2010), a movie about Yip Man not related to Ip Man or Ip Man 2.

Fan was a contract artist for the Hong Kong television station TVB in the 1990s. He starred as a star in a number of television dramas such as Young Hero Fang Shiyu (1999) and Demi-Gods and Semi-Devils (1997). After leaving TVB, he worked on a few Taiwanese and mainland Chinese TV series before turning his attention to films.
Fan made his acting debut in Stanley Tong’s 1991 film The Stone Age Warriors, after completing his studies. Fan, then 18, portrayed the title character in Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1992), a Hong Kong film that was based on Riki-Oh manga.
