Caldera was the son of Mexican immigrants Soledad Caldera and Benjamin Caldera. He was born in El Paso on April 1, 1956. When he was four years old, his family fled Texas to California. He lived briefly in Boyle Heights in Los Angeles before moving to Whittier. In 1978, he earned a Bachelor’s degree from the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. He then served active duty at Fort Dix, New Jersey, from 1978 to 1983. In 1987, he was accepted at Harvard University. He earned a joint J.D./M.B.A. Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School, respectively.
Caldera quit the Assembly before completing his third term. He took over as chief operating officer and managing director of President Bill Clinton’s Corporation for National and Community Service (1997-1998), a domestic volunteer program.
While the FAA and select local authorities were given some degree of notification in advance, many other officials and the general public were not. The fly-over of the lower Manhattan financial district created a panic. Many feared it was another terrorist attack like the one that destroyed the twin towers of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001, or an aborted attack attempt, because of the F-16 following the presidential plane. This led scores of people to leave their desks and large office buildings to be evacuated in a speedy but impromptu fashion.
Caldera served on the board of directors of IndyMac Bank from 2002 until its failure, and subsequent seizure by the government, in July 2008.
From 1992 to 1997 Caldera was a California State Assemblyman representing nearly 400,000 people in the 46th State Assembly District, which is situated in downtown Los Angeles. He was an Assemblyman and served as the chairman of the Banking and Finance Committee and the Revenue and Taxation Committee.

Louis Caldera, born April 1, 1956, is an American politician and member the Democratic Party. He served as the Director for the White House Military Office (January to May 2009) and the 17th Secretary of the Army (January 2001 to January 2001). Caldera was also a California State Assemblyman (January 1992 to January 1997).
Caldera graduated from Harvard Law School. He practiced law at O’Melveny & Myers from 1987 to 1990, and then at Buchalter, Nemer, Fields, and Younger from 1990 to 1991. He was the Deputy Counsel for Los Angeles County from 1991 to 1992.
On May 22, 1998, Clinton announced Caldera as his selection for Secretary of the Army. On July 2, 1998, Caldera was sworn in as the 17th Secretary of the Army by Secretary of Defense William Cohen.
