During the 131st General Assembly, Senator Gentile proposed legislation to provide tax relief to fully disabled veterans. Senate Bill 302, jointly sponsored by Senator Gentile and Minority Leader Joe Schiavoni, would exempt 100% disabled veterans from paying any property tax on their home.

In December, it was announced that Senator Wilson had chosen Gentile to fill the seat. On December 15, 2011, he was sworn in to office. Gentile was elected to a full term as a senator in 2012. He defeated Republican Shane Thompson 53%-47%. This was a significant win for Gentile as he was the GOP’s top target. The GOP spent more than $1 million to defeat him. Gentile raised approximately $800,000.

He was previously the senator for the 30th District in the Ohio Senate. Before his appointment to the Senate, he was also a member of Ohio’s House of Representatives. His district, which stretches from Carrollton in Ohio to Athens in Ohio, is one of the largest. It also includes large swathes of the Ohio Valley. Gentile was the Assistant Minority Whip of the Ohio Senate. He is a Democrat. Gentile lost his 2016 Senate election bid to Frank Hoagland.

Gentile was elected to the Ohio House to replace John Domenick, an incumbent representative who couldn’t run for a second term due to term limits. In the primary election, he faced four other candidates and won 52.41% of votes to win the nomination. In the general election, Gentile was faced with Republican Mark Clark and won with 66.25%.

In 2013, the state of Ohio announced that a mine safety training center in Harrison County, Ohio, would be closed and relocated. Senator Gentile worked with Harrison County officials and the United Mine Workers union to keep the facility open. In 2016, due to Gentile’s efforts, Ohio approved funding for a new mine safety training center in Harrison County.
