Born December 24, 1952, Lorne Albert Calvert (SOM) was the 13th Premier for Saskatchewan from 2001 to 2007. Calvert was the leader and successor to Dwain Lingenfelter of the Saskatchewan New Democratic Party between 2001 and June 6, 2009.

Calvert was elected NDP leader after Premier Roy Romanow resigned. He became premier on February 8, 2001. In Romanow’s riding in Saskatoon Riversdale, he was re-elected as a member of the legislature.

Calvert and his government were defeated in the 2007 provincial election, dropping to 20 seats while the Saskatchewan Party under Brad Wall won a majority government with 38.

Calvert was also engaged in a war of words with federal Conservative MP Maurice Vellacott over how the clawback of non-renewable resource revenues from the equalization formula as implemented in the 2007 federal budget. Calvert argued that the province would get less under the new federal formula.

In the riding of Moose Jaw Wakamow, he was re-elected both in 1991 and 1995. Deb Higgins succeeded him in 1999, but he did not contest the election.

Calvert was born in Moose Jaw (Saskatchewan). Calvert was married to Betty Sluzalo in Perdue, Saskatchewan, in 1975. At the University of Regina, he received his undergraduate degree in economics. Although he originally intended to study law, he felt the call to the ministry of The United Church of Canada. He attended the St. Andrew’s College seminary, Saskatoon’s then- Regina Campus. In 1976, he was ordained minister of the United Church of Canada and served as minister to several rural congregations. Calvert served as the minister of Zion United Church’s substantial pastoral charge in Moose Jaw from 1979 to 1986.

In the 1986 provincial election, he ran as a New Democrat and supported a platform that prohibited the construction of a casino in Moose Jaw. As the Member of Legislative Assembly for the constituency of Moose Jaw South, he was elected to the Legislative Assembly of Saskatchewan.

Calvert and the NDP narrowly defeated the centre-right opposition Saskatchewan Party in the 2003 provincial election. The NDP won 30 seats of the 58 seats in the election. During the campaign, Calvert apologized for an internal cartoon that had been leaked to the media. It depicted Saskatchewan Party leader Elwin Hermanson loading NDP sympathizers onto rail cars. The cartoon referred to speculation that, if elected, Hermanson would replace civil servants who were NDP supporters with Saskatchewan Party supporters. B’nai Brith Canada stated that the cartoon “trivializes the crimes of the Holocaust and causes undeserved anguish to those who survived that evil regime”.
