Lorna Dee Cervantes is one of the most popular and richest Poet who was born on August 6, 1954 in San Francisco, United States. Cervantes was born in San Francisco in 1954 to parents of Native American (Chumash), and Mexican (Chumash) heritages. She grew up in San Jose, California with her grandmother, brother, and mother. She was raised speaking only English. Her parents strictly enforced this rule, allowing only English to be spoken at her home by her and her brother. This was done to stop the racism in her community. Later in her life, her poetry was inspired by her struggle to find her true identity and the loss of her language. Abraham Lincoln High School was where she attended. In 1976, she received an Associate Arts degree at San Jose Community College and in 1984, a BA in Creative Arts at San Jose State University. For a PhD History of Consciousness (all except dissertation), she attended UC Santa Cruz, 1984-1988.
Cervantes has given poetry readings, workshops, and guest lectures all over the US. She was a member of the Librotraficante Movement. After being boxed up during class, the books were taken out of their classrooms and transported to Tucson by the Librotraficante Caravan. Cervantes gave a touching speech to supporters of the Movement outside the Alamo in March 2012.
In an interview conducted by Sonia V. Gonzalez, the poet states that through writing and publishing, “I was trying to give back that gift that had saved me when I discovered, again, African-American women’s poetry. I was having this vision of some little Chicana in San Antonio [Texas] going, scanning the shelves, like I used to do, scanning the shelves for women’s names, or Spanish surnames, hoping she’ll pull it out, relate to it. So it was intentionally accessible poetry, intended to bridge that gap, that literacy gap.” Cervantes was actively involved in the publication of numerous Chicana/o writers from the 1970s onwards when she produced her own Chicana/o literary journal, MANGO “which was the first to publish Sandra Cisneros, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Alberto Rios, Ray Gonzalez, Ronnie Burk, and Orlando Ramírez [co-editor]. Cervantes and MANGO also championed the early work of writers Gary Soto, José Montoya, José Montalvo, José Antonio Burciaga, and her personal favourite, Luís Omar Salinas”
The American Literature Association Conference in San Francisco, May 2012 featured seven poets. In 2012, Ciento: 100 100-Word Love Poems received a Northern California Book Award under the poetry category.

Stephen Cervantes, her brother, was a librarian at the local library. She became familiar with Shakespeare and Shelly, and Byron, which would have the greatest influence on her self-conception of herself as a poet. She had already compiled her first poetry collection at the age of 15. She traveled to Mexico City with her brother in 1974, where she performed with the Theater of the People of San Jose at the Quinto Fest de los Teatros Chicanos. Cervantes was invited to read some of her poetry at the last minute. Cervantes chose to read “Refugee ship”, a section of her poetry that depicts the main dilemma of being Chicanx, feeling lost between two cultures. The reading attracted much attention, and it was published in a Mexican newspaper as well as other journals. Later, the poem was included in Emplumada (1981), her award-winning debut.
Her fifth collection, Sueño, published in 2013 was shortlisted for the Latin American Book Award in poetry in 2014. A European launch of the collection was hosted by University College Cork, Ireland in June 2014 as part of a symposium on Pathways, Explorations, Approaches in Mexican and Mexican American Studies.
