Bini Smaghi joined French bank Société Générale as a second vice-chairman and independent director in 2014. Since January 2015, he has been serving as Chairman of the Board of Directors. Société Générale had previously split the roles of chairman and chief executive as required by European law, appointing Bini Smaghi to chair the board of directors while Frédéric Oudéa continued as chief executive.
Bini Smaghi was a Member of the Executive Board at the European Central Bank, Jean-Claude Trichet’s leadership, from June 2005 to November 2011. He was elected for an eight-year non-renewable mandate. He succeeded Tommaso Padao–Schioppa.

Bini Smaghi was born in Brussels and acquired a good knowledge of foreign languages from an early age. He graduated from the Lycee Francais de Bruxelles in 1974. He graduated from the Universite catholique de Louvain in Economics (Belgium) in 1978. He was awarded a Fulbright Commission scholarship by the U.S.-Italy Fulbright Commission in 1980 and received a master’s in Economics at the University of Southern California in 1980. In 1988, he earned a Ph.D. at the University of Chicago.
Bini Smaghi, before joining the ECB was the Director General for International Financial Relations at the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance. From 2003 to 2005, he was vice-president at the Economic and Financial Committee of the European Union (EFC). His previous appointments included Deputy Director General Research of ECB, Head of Policy Division of European Monetary Institute (Frankfurt) and Head of Exchange Rate and International Trade Division of Research Department of Bank of Italy (Rome). His publications include extensive work in international and monetary economics.
In 2012, Bini Smaghi became a Visiting Scholar at Harvard’s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs and Senior Research Fellow at Istituto Affari Internazionali in Rome.
