Bernardi was born in Trento. He began his long career as a setter in the 1980s, but later switched to passer and hitter. He was a member of the Panini Modena Club from 1985 to 2001. Bernardi won the Italian championship nine more times with Modena, and Sisley Treviso. He played for Sisley Treviso from 1990 to 2001.

His first appearance with the Italy national volleyball team came on 27 May

1987. He played for 306 games in “Azzurri”, winning two European gold medals (1989 and 1995), two World Championships (1990, 1994) and three Volleyball World Leagues. He also has five more silver medals, one bronze and two more golds. After the Italians had won the 1992 FIVB League, Lorenzo was named most valuable player. After Italy won the gold medal for the second straight time, Lorenzo was awarded the title of Best Player at the 1994 FIVBWorld Championship. Italy won five straight matches in Pool B during Bernardi’s 1996 Olympic Games appearance. Italy’s success continued with a victory in four sets over Argentina in the quarterfinals. It then won four sets in the semifinals against Serbia and Montenegro, to reach its first Olympic gold medal match. The Netherlands won in five sets, leaving Italy with the silver. After Italy won the gold medal for the second straight time, Lorenzo was awarded the title of Best Player at the 1994 FIVBWorld Championship. He played in Qatar in 2004 and, after a stint in Greece and Olympiacos in Greece, he returned to Italy in November 2005. He was 37 years old when he was awarded MVP of the first match of his new club career in Italy. He played in the B1 series, which is Italy’s third category. His playing career ended with Montichiari in 2007. Bernardi participated in 306 international competitions for Italy. Lorenzo was part nine Italian League championship teams that helped cement his legend in Italy. He was named the head coach of Jastrzebski Wegiel in Poland during the 2010/2011 season and helped them reach the fourth spot in the CEV Champions League. In 2014, Bernardi was appointed new coach at Halkbank Ankara. He replaced Slobodan Kovac in November 2016 as Sir Safety Perugia’s coach.
