Benacquisto ran in the 30th district for re-election after Florida’s Senate districts were reorganized in 2012. It covered most of the old 27, but not Wellington, her home that had been drawn out of the district. In the new 30th she moved to Fort Myers and won the party nomination. She faced off against Democratic nominee Debbie Jordan during the general election. The Naples Daily News supported Benacquisto’s re-election and praised her for having “sponsored the Andrew Widman Act, to better track dangerous criminals, and the Silver Alert Program that protects seniors astray.” She was elected with 62% of the votes.

Benacquisto’s district was reconfigured and renumbered after court-ordered redistricting in 2016.

Benacquisto, a senator, voted for controversial legislation called the “parent trigger”, which would have allowed parents to make failing public schools charter schools. However, the bill was not passed. Benacquisto also supported legislation to exempt “certain manufacturing items” from the state’s sale tax, which could allow for increased manufacturing operations in the state. Benacquisto, who was involved in the Westboro Baptist Church’s protest of certain funerals, sponsored legislation to make it a crime to “protest within 500 feet of a burial,” noting that “we’ve seen such protests all across the country and that it is very disappointing that people would use the time of grief to make political statements.” We wanted to take a strong stand in Florida to let everyone know that our intention was to preserve the time of burial, the time of grieving, and the time to say goodbye. Benacquisto was elected Majority Leader in the Florida State Senate during the 2012-2014 legislative session. She was recently considered as a possible replacement for Jennifer Carroll, Lieutenant Governor of Florida.
