Liz, an indoor volleyball player, was a member for five years of the USA Volleyball Team and a starting athlete in the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Bronze medals were won at the 1990 World Championships, Beijing, China, 1987 Pan Am Games, Indianapolis, IN, as well as the 1986 Goodwill Games, Moscow, Russia. Liz won the 1984 NCAA Championships in UCLA where she holds many single-season and career records. She was awarded the Broderick award for being the best collegiate volleyball player in the country. Masakayan was a two-time All- American 1st Team, and three-time All-Conference 1st Team player. She was also selected twice to the NCAA All-Tournament Team. Liz was named the 1985-86 UCLA Female Athlete Of The Year. She was also selected to the 1980’s UCLA All- Decade Team as well as the 1999 Volleyball Magazine All-Millennium Team. She was also inducted into UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.

They won the 1993, 94 and 95 Shootouts and U.S. Opens, the1993 and 94 U.S. Championships and the inaugural 1994 Goodwill Games in St. Petersburg, Russia. 1994 World Champions in La Serena, Chile, Kirby/Masakayan shared the World’s Most Outstanding Player award that year. Liz was the WPVA’s (Women’s Professional Volleyball Association) 1992 Most Valuable Player, 1993 co-Most Valuable Player and the Best Defensive Player in 1991 and 92. In addition, she was the 1993 and 94 Best Hitter and the 1995 Most Inspirational Player after coming back from several knee surgeries.
Liz and her partner, Elaine Youngs, were 4th in the world in points toward qualifying for the 2000 Sydney, Australia Olympics, however, only two teams per country were accepted. They captured the first tournament of the millennium in February 2000 at Vitoria, Brazil, as well as winning the Espinho, Portugal and Dalian, China events later on that season. The pair also won the bronze medal at the 1999 World Championships in Marseille, France, ranking them 2nd in the world. Ranked #1 in the U.S. in 1999, they won 4 out of the 7 domestic events, and in 1997 they captured the Chicago Open and the Best of the Beach tournament in Kauai.

Liz Masakayan hasn’t always played volleyball. It was actually the last organized sport she attempted in her first year at Santa Monica High School (10th grade back in the 80s). The first year was on JV and the second two on Varsity, where the team won State in 1982. She played Little League baseball when she was ten years old. This was the first year Title IX allowed girls to participate in Little League baseball. She was the only girl on the team and played three positions: pitcher, first base, center field. Masakayan was subject to many comments during her four-year tenure on a team of boys. However, she says that she learned early that if you work hard, have fun and treat people well, everything will fall into place. She was a AYSO soccer player for six years, and she ran track for four years. In 11th grade Liz decided not to run track and helped form the first (1981-) girls’ soccer team at Santa Monica High School. She played goalie and midback for 2 years.
She won the Broderick Award (now the Honda Sports Award), as the best female collegiate volleyball player at UCLA in 1985.
As an indoor coach, Liz was an assistant coach at UCLA when they won the National Championships in 1991 and runner up in 1992, a volunteer assistant when they placed 5th in 1993, and a student assistant when they placed 5th in
