She finished third behind Qieyang, who also broke her Asian record at the 2012 London Olympics. Liu won the 2012 IAAF World Race Walking Challenge Final and beat Qieyang. This allowed Jin Bingjie to break Jin Bingjie’s 22-year-old Asian record of the 5000m walk at Chinese University Games. In her first race of 2013, she won the Memorial Albisetti in 1:27.06 hours.

After testing positive for higenamine in May 2016, she was banned from 13 June to 13 July 2016.

In 2019 she became the first woman ever to finish a women’s 50-kilometer race walk in less than four hours, finishing in 3 hours, 59 minutes, 15 seconds at the Chinese Race Walk Grand Prix.

Liu has won numerous medals at the World Championships in Athletics. She was awarded three gold medals in 2011, 2015 and 2019, as well as two silver medals in 2009, 2013 and 2014. In 2008 and 2012, she was fourth at the Summer Olympics. Liu was the Olympic 20km racewalking gold medalist in 2016. Liu has won two gold medals at the Asian Games. She was a winner in 2006 and 2010. In 2014, she was second at the IAAF World Race Walking Cup. She was the World Junior Champion during her early career.

She won the gold medal with 1:28:35 in women’s 20 km walk at Rio Olympic Games on 19 August 2016.
