Her role as Rebecca Washington, an attorney on ABC’s legal drama The Practice (1997-1903) is her most well-known. She was also the TNT comedy-drama Men of a Certain Age’s Melissa Thoreau.
In 2005, Hamilton was awarded a Peabody Award for directing and creating the documentary film Beah: a Black Woman Speaks. This film is about Beah Richards (a pioneering black actress) who was instrumental in establishing African- American actresses. They had met while working on Beloved (1998). Hamilton recorded more than 70 hours of their conversations over the next two-years. Hamilton’s film explored Richards political activism and her poetry. The Grand Jury Prize at AFI Film Festival was awarded to the film. Hamilton and R. Gregory Christie, an illustrator, collaborated to make Richards’ poem a children’s story. Simon and Schuster published Keep Climbing Girls in 2006.
Hamilton played the role of Melissa in Men of a Certain Age, an hour-long comedy-drama starring Ray Romano, Andre Braugher, and Scott Bakula that ran from 2009 to 2011.
In the fall of 2010, Hamilton took a faculty position in the School of Theater for the California Institute of the Arts.

Hamilton fell in love early with theatre. She saw many off-Broadway productions of the Negro Ensemble Company in the 1970s, including A Soldier’s Story, and The First Breeze of Summer. After a year, she was accepted to Carnegie Mellon University for theater studies. In 1985, she received a Bachelor in Fine Arts in Theater from New York University’s Tisch Drama School. After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, she went on to The Juilliard School for graduate studies where she received a M.A. She graduated in Drama in 1989.

Hamilton received critical acclaim for her role in Suzanne Alexander’s story in Adrienne Kennedy’s The Ohio State Murders. She also won a second Obie Award and a Lucille Lortel nomination.
In August 2009, Hamilton married historian and writer Robin Kelley. They reside in the View Park-Windsor Hills neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.
