Lisa Sokolov is one of the most popular and richest Singer who was born on September 24, 1954 in Manhasset, New York, United States. Sokolov was the daughter of Bernard and Helen Sokolov. She was born in Manhasset in New York in 1954. She was raised in Roslyn. Her father played stride piano, and she listened to Stan Getz, Mabel Mercer and Art Tatum. She started singing at a young age, and she studied piano for many years.

Angel Rodeo was praised by Cadence Magazine and the Allmusic Guide, with Cadence Magazine giving the album the Editor’s Choice Best CD 1993 award. Cadence Magazine also called the album “most adventurous” as well as “never less than exceptional.”

She appeared on the album Songs (2002) by percussionist Gerry Hemingway, with Ellery Eskelin, Herb Robertson, Kermit Driscoll, James Emery, John Butcher, Thomas Lehn, and Wolter Wierbos. In 2001, she was featured on William Parker’s Song Cycle.

Presence received a five-star “masterpiece” rating from Down Beat and was named best CD of 2004. The received a four-star rating from Scott Yanow of Allmusic. The Down Beat review stated: “as far removed stylistically from the reigning royalty of female jazz vocalists as John Coltrane is from Grover Washington, Lisa Sokolov fills every moment of Presence with just that.” The review called the album “ecstatic”, “compelling” “masterful,” and “life affirming.”

She has been a teacher at the Experimental Theater Wing of the Tisch School of the Arts since 1981. This is part of New York University. Embodied VoiceWork can be used for arts education, human potential work, music therapy and mind/body medicine practice. In the world of music therapy, she is a leader and innovator in the application of the voice to human capacity. Barcelona Publishers published Sokolov’s Embodied VoiceWork: Beyond Singing in January 2020.

She attended Bennington College in 1972, where she studied with Bill Dixon, Milford Graves and Jimmy Lyons. Frank Baker was her voice teacher and she also worked with Vivian Fine (composer) and Louis Calabro (voice teacher). She was also exposed to Betty Carter’s vocals and Meredith Monk’s music, who are both considered influences on Sokolov’s style. She was a double major in music/black metal and minored to philosophy. She discovered avant-garde jazz while at Bennington and incorporated it into her vocal style.

Sokolov graduated from Bennington College in 1976. She then moved to New York City, where she spent several months in Paris before returning to the U.S. for graduate music therapy work. Sokolov continued singing and used her music therapy work to complement her performing career. Sokolov met Jeanne Lee in New York City. She was the one who introduced her to William Parker, a bassist. She was part the Studio Henry scene, which was a collaborative performance space with John Zorn and Wayne Horvitz. Elliott Sharp, Robin Holcomb and Dave Sewelson were also there. While she was working as a music therapist, she continued singing and composition and started teaching in the NYU graduate music department.

In 1993, she released her debut album, angel Rodeo, which featured notable Bangladeshi tabla player Badal Roy. The album, along with all albums by Sokolov, featured a mix of original compositions and re-interpreted standards from a variety of genres.
