They also maintained technical data and ensured quality compliance of more than 1.6 Million spare and repair parts used daily by more than 24,000 military units as well as civilian federal agencies.

In June 1974, Bird was awarded her navy commission by the Naval Officer Candidate School. She served sea duty as a stores officer and stock control officers on the USS Frank Cable (AS-40), and as a supply officer on USS Puget Sound, (AD-38).
Bird joined the Naval Supply Systems Command in 1994 as director of Navy Defense Business Operations Fund Division. She then served as director of Supply Corps Assignment/Placement Branch of Office of Supply Corps Personnel, Bureau of Naval Personnel. In March 1998, she returned to NAVSUP Headquarters as deputy commander for financial management/comptroller. Bird was appointed vice commander of Naval Supply Systems Command and promoted to rear admiral (lower halves) in 1999. Bird was the director of Supply, Ordnance and Logistics Operations Division, Office of the Chief of Naval Operations, Washington, D.C., and was then nominated to the rank of rear admiral, upper half, in July 2002.
