In 2002, she was defeated by Bob O’Connor, an Aurora Alderman at-Large. She became the first Hispanic person to be elected to the Illinois General Assembly.

Governor Pritzker announced on February 15, 2019 that Chapa laVia would become the Director of Illinois Department of Veteran’s Affairs. Chapa LaVia lives in Aurora with her husband and their two children.
