Liem Swie King Biography

Liem Swie King is one of the most popular and richest Actor who was born on February 28, 1956 in Kudus, Indonesia. Liem was born 28 February 1956 in Kudus Regency (Central Java). His parents were Ng Thian Poo from Putian, Fujian and Oei See Mo. He was the only child of eight children. He attended Sekolah Tionghoa in elementary school and then moved to SD Negeri Dema’an II, 1965. Guntur, his older sister suggested his name. This was to comply with the government’s directive that any Indonesian with a Chinese name should adopt an “Indonesian” name. However, it didn’t affect how he was addressed in public or in competition. Tahir Djide, his physical trainer, stated that it was easier to pronounce King than Guntur.

In 1974, Liem was still in high school and won the national championship. He also participated for the first-time in the All England that year. Liem was awarded the All-England Men’s Singles Championships 1978, 1979, and 1981. This was a six-year streak to the finals (1976-1981), of the most prestigious badminton tournament in the world. He finished second in the 1980 and 1983 triennial World Championships to Rudy Hartono, Icuk Suugiarto, and was the third place finisher. He was part of the winning Indonesian Thomas Cup teams in 1976, 1979 and 1984. He played singles as well as doubles during these two years. He was also a participant in the 1982 and 1986 Thomas Cup. He was bronze medalist in the doubles for men with Kartono at Calgary’s 1985 IBF World Championships.

Liem’s vertical leap explosiveness came from his low crouching stance before launching his jump, he then intercepted the shuttlecock at high altitude with a ferocious whipping strike, or sometimes a deceptive drop shot which immobilized his opponent who was expecting a slamming hit from him. By intercepting the shuttlecock at higher altitude, Liem was able to deliver a shot with steeper angle. Given his average stature, his jump-smash made a quite dramatic visual for the spectators, due to the perceived height of his leap. 1977. He liked fast-paced style and simply wanted to hit the shuttlecock quicker. No coaches complained about it since they saw it improved Liem’s game.

He retired from badminton in 1988, and now owns a health spa in Jakarta.

1973 saw Liem join the provincial badminton team for National Sports Competition (Pekan Olahraga Nasional). VIII. After defeating senior players, Liem reached the final of the men’s singles and lost to Iie Sumirat, a veteran national squad member. He also won the Kejuaraan Duniabulu Tangkis Piala Garuda (Garudacup Badminton World Champion) in Tegal that year.

Liem Swie Kings (Chinese Lin Shui Jing / pinyin Lin Shuijing – born 28 February 1956) was an ex-badminton player from Indonesia who excelled in the late 1970s and into the 1980s. He was the All England champion in 1978, 1979, and 1981. He was one of the most prominent singles players in that era, along with Morten Frost (Denmark), Han Jian (China), and Prakash Padukone. He was a world-class player in both men’s doubles and men’s singles. His jumping smash was legendary.

At the age of 15 Liem was the junior single champion in Central Java. He won his first international tournament, First Djakarta Badminton Open Tournament in November 1972. Ng Choi Yu from Singapore was defeated by Liem, and then he lost to Sangob Ratananusorn of Thailand. He won the Moenadi Cup in men’s singles, and men’s pairs categories later, with Hariamanto Kartono, his childhood friend.

King met his wife Lucia Alamsah in 1976 and they had three children, Alexander, Stephanie and Michelle. King’s life and achievements were the inspiration for the 2009 Indonesian movie “King” (2009) in which he made a cameo appearance. That same year, Robert Adhi Kusumaputra published a biography on the Indonesia legend, titled “Call Me, King” (Panggil Aku, King).
