She immigrated to Canada with her family in 1968. In 1969, she moved to Vancouver (British Columbia). She was a member of many grassroots political organizations in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside before she was elected to Parliament. To help Bruce Eriksen start the Downtown Eastside Residents Association, a prominent low-income housing advocacy organization, she dropped out of university. She helped save Carnegie Library, which was later transformed into the Carnegie Community Centre for low-income adults. The Hospital Employees’ Union employed Davies from 1994 to 1997.
Davies was in a relationship of common-law for 24 years with Bruce Eriksen (Vancouver city councillor), who died from cancer in 1997. They had a son named Lief. Davies was the first Canadian female Member of Parliament to disclose that she was in a relationship with a man who was also her husband.
In December 2007, Davies received the Justice Gerald Le Dain Award for Achievement in the Field of Law. She was recognized for her “outstanding drug policy reform work” at the 2007 International Drug Policy Reform Conference, hosted by the Drug Policy Alliance and the Criminal Justice Policy Foundation.
In 2009, she was interviewed for the Beyond Gay: The Politics of Pride documentary on Gay Pride celebrations internationally.
Davies was first elected to Parliament in 1997. She was re-elected in 2000 and again in 2006, 2008 and 2008. She was previously the NDP house leader, spokesperson for housing, homelessness, and multiculturalism. In 2008, she was re-elected to parliament. She was a strong advocate for drug policy reform in parliament, particularly to stop the criminalization and abuse of drug users.

In 2005, during the parliamentary debate on same-sex marriage in Canada, Conservative MP Jason Kenney cited Davies’ prior relationship with Eriksen as proof that marriage law does not discriminate against LGBT individuals, since a gay person can marry a member of the opposite sex. Davies, who was never formally married to Eriksen, joined other commentators in criticizing Kenney for playing politics with other parliamentarians’ personal lives.
