She is also a journalist and photographer. Chang began her acting career in New York City and then moved on to other roles such as modeling and acting. Chang studied photography at The International Center of Photography. She has accumulated a collection of photos of people of color in the arts since the 1980s. Chang was commissioned in 1995 by the APALA for a photo essay entitled “Asian Pacific Americans In the Workforce”. She was awarded a Murray and Isabella Rayburn Foundation Grant in 1996 to create three more sets of photos related to her first solo exhibit, “Asian Pacific Americans In the Workforce”. These were displayed at the Tamiment Library and Robert F. This multi-component exhibit included “Notable Asian Americans” who broke barriers and forged unique paths to success in their field, and “Asian Pacific Americans in Workforce”, which showcased ordinary women and men with diverse Asian/Pacific ancestry working in various fields and occupations. The third component was a piece of fabric art called “Coming To America”, which described her grandmother’s experiences at Angel Island Immigration Station.

Chang’s feature film debut was in Berry Gordy’s The Last Dragon in 1984. She was followed in 1985 by John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China in 1986. Chang’s professional stage debut was as Liat in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s South Pacific tour, directed by Geraldine Fitzgerald. It starred Robert Goulet and Barbara Eden. She made her New York stage debut as Liat in Richard Caliban’s Famine Plays at Cucaracha Theatre Company in 1990. She appeared in Two Gentlemen of Verona (1991), and Underground Soap (late night theater soap opera). She was Angela in Waitin’ 2 End Hell directed by Woodie Kings, Jr. at the New Federal Theatre. She also starred in Jing-mei Woo’s adaptation of Two Kinds directed by Isaiah Sheffer at Symphony Space. This performance was also broadcast on National Public Radio. She was the Princess Noel of Lonnie Carter’s Gulliver at La MaMa in 1993. In Hot Keys, she played Suzie with the Naked Angels Theatre Company and Signature Theatre Company in 1993. She was Sally and Joy in Sam Shepard’s 1996 play Chicago at The Public Theater. She played Carole Barbara in Loreyhayes’ Power Play at the Billie Holiday Theatre in 2005. She played the same role at the revival of Power Play at 2013 National Black Theatre Festival.

In 2010, the “Lia Chang Theater Photography and Other Works Portfolio” was established in the Asian Pacific American Performing Arts Collection housed in the Library of Congress. In 2011, In Rehearsal, a display of 36 photographs drawn from that Portfolio were on view in the Asian Division Reading Room at the Library of Congress, and her “Portraits of New York Chinatown After 9/11” were featured in a Post 9-11 Commemorative Display for the 10th Anniversary of the attacks on the World Trade Center. In 2015, in Playbill, Laura Heywood picked Chang for her top ten list of “Most Useful Theatre Women on Social Media”, writing: “Whether it’s a live performance, on a red carpet, or behind the scenes at an awards show or opening night, Lia seems to always capture a moment of perfect realness between a star’s planned poses. I always feel like I know the subjects more intimately than I did before viewing her photos.”
