Li Lingwei is one of the most popular and richest Chinese track and field athlete who was born on January 4, 1964 in Lishui, Zhejiang, China. Li Lingwei was born in Lishui (Zhejiang), China. She weighed just 4 pounds when she arrived on January 4, 1964. Her mother was concerned about Li’s health and encouraged her to play non-contact sports like badminton, but Li loved all sports. Li was a star athlete in her youth, winning first place in the 400-meter race. Li Lingwei, an 11-year-old girl from Zhejiang, was selected for the Zhejiang Provincial Badminton Team in 1975. Five years later, in 1980 she won both the National Youth Badminton singles and adult doubles championships. She was then selected for the national badminton squad. She learned her physical and mental skills from Chen Fushou, her coach in national badminton. At 17 years old, she entered the 1981 Alba Quartz World Cup and reached her first international final.
Li retired in 1989 and she entered University of Hangzhou to coach. Li Ling Wei, a former assistant coach for China’s national badminton teams, returned to China in 1991 and became the head coach of China’s women’s team. She was also the first coach to take over the role of the women’s coach. In 1998, she won the 1998 Uber Cup Champion title. The funding problems faced by the badminton league in 1998 were caused by the denial of participation to the Atlanta Olympic Games. Li Lingwei and several coaches led the letter that impeached Li Yongbo, the national team coach. The training bureau found that Li Yongbo did not have a problem with corruption or embezzlement and allowed him to remain in office. Li Lingwei, Li Mao, and others left the badminton club. Li Lingwei spoke out about her resignation saying that there was no other reason. She simply didn’t want it to happen. Li has nurtured top players like Ye Zhaoying and Gong Zhichao.
Li Lingwei never competed in the Olympics because badminton did not become an Olympic sport until 1992. However, she was chosen as one of the five retired athletes to carry the Olympic flag during the opening ceremony of the 2008 Beijing Olympics. In July 2012, she was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee, receiving 83 votes out of 94. IOC president Jacques Rogge presented her with an “IOC gold medal”.
In terms of honor in the badminton world, Li Lingwei was awarded the international badminton Distinguished Service Award called “Outstanding Achievement Award” by the International Badminton Federation in 1994; and was elected into the Badminton Hall of Fame 4 years later in 1998. Li Lingwei used to be the torchbearer of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. And at the opening ceremony of the Beijing Olympic Games as the flag bearer of the Olympic Games. For her Olympic involvement, the IOC honored her with the Women and Sport Award in March 2008.
She was a brilliant player all around, with excellent court coverage and net play. This allowed her to maintain an overall advantage over Han Aiping, her rival and sometimes doubles partner. They were the dominant pair in international women’s badminton throughout the 1980s. Together, they won the IBF World Championships (now called BWF World Championships), twice and the IBF World doubles in 1985. They were also part of Chinese teams that won the biennial Uber Cup (women’s world team) competitions. Li Lingwei was awarded the singles title twice at the IBF World Championships, in 1983 and 1989. She was awarded a Silver medal at the 1987 World Championships, and a Bronze at the 1985 World Championships. During the 1980’s, Li was the dominant player in women’s badminton. She won more than 40 international titles. She won 3 gold medals at World Championships as well as 4 gold medals for the World Grand Prix Finals. There were also 3 All England titles in Women’s Singles or Women’s doubles. Li was part of the original team that won the 1984 Uber Cup for China. From 1984 to 1987, Li won four consecutive titles at the Badminton World Cups for women’s singles and three titles in women’s doubles from 1983, 1986, and 1987.

In 2012, she was elected as a member to the International Olympic Committee. In December 2016, she was elected vice president of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Li is actively involved in improving the participation of women in sport and equal representation.
Li received numerous honors for her hard work both on and off the court. Li was awarded the national title of “Best Athlete” and “Best International Athlete”, respectively, in 1980 and 1985. Li has stated that, “as women, we have to work harder because we have so many roles to play – mother, daughter or wife – so most of us are in a very challenging situation. We have to work harder than men, otherwise we can’t achieve our goals.” She believed that in comparison to other sports, “badminton is achieving a lot of positive goals, in women’s participation for example, and with equal prize money. And it is the same with participation at events. It was very natural that she became the Vice-Chair of the Women’s Commission of the BWF in 2009. Li has also been serving as the Deputy Chair of the International Relations Commission of the BWF. Despite being heavily involved with multiple associations, Li still found the time to work as the Deputy Director in the International Relations Department for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games Organizing Committee (BOCOG) from 2003 to 2008.
