Leyla Zana is one of the most popular and richest Politician who was born on May 3, 1961 in Silvan, Diyarbakır, Diyarbakır Province, Turkey. She was born May 1961 in Silvan in Diyarbakir Province in the southeast Turkey. She was 14 when she married Mehdi Zana. He was mayor of Diyarbakir from 1964 to 1973 and was a political prisoner.

A letter she wrote in Kurdish that was published in a Kurdish paper, expressing pro-separatist views, was the reason her 1998 sentence was extended. She published Writings from Prison while in prison.

In January 2005, the European Court of Human Rights awarded Zana and each of the other defendants 9000 € from the Turkish government, ruling Turkey had violated her rights of free expression. Soon after Zana and others announced the new political formation Democratic Society Movement (DTH). On 17 August 2005, Democratic Society Party (DTP) was founded as the merger of Democratic People’s Party (DEHAP) and DTH.

As of 2007, Zana is active in human rights issues in Turkey and working in the new party she co founded in 2005. One controversial idea is her proposal to reorganize Turkey into a set of federal states, one of them being Kurdistan.

Although Zana was protected by her parliamentary immunity, she was stripped of her immunity after joining the Democracy Party. She was charged with treason, membership in the Kurdistan Workers Party, (PKK), and wearing the colors yellow, green, and red. Zana was not charged with treason and she denied any affiliation to the PKK. However, the prosecution relied on witness statements that were allegedly obtained through torture and sentenced her and the others to 15 years imprisonment. She claimed that she was a member of the PKK at her sentencing.

Leyla Zana, a Turkish politician of Kurdish heritage, was born 3 May 1961. She was held in prison for 10 years for her political activism which was considered to be against the country’s unity by Turkish courts. The 1995 Sakharov Prize was presented to her by the European Parliament. However, she was not able to collect the award until her release in 2004. After being recognized by Rafto Foundation in 1994 for her peaceful struggle to defend the human rights and dignity of the Kurdish population in Turkey, she was also given the Rafto Prize.

Zana, a member of the Social Democratic People’s Party of Turkey (SHP), was elected to the Grand National Assembly of Turkey in 1991. After being sworn into the parliament, she used Kurdish to create a scandal. Even though Kurdish was legal in Turkey, it had been illegal to use in private for many years. The legalization of the Kurdish language was only achieved in 1991. However, speaking Kurdish in public places remained illegal until Zana was sworn into office. These were her remarks.

In 2001 the European Court of Human Rights ruled against Turkey after a review of her trial; although Turkey did not recognize the result, in 2003 a new harmonization law permitted retrials based on ECHR decisions. In 2002, a film named The Back of the World, directed by Spanish-Peruvian filmmaker Javier Corcuera, examined her case. In April 2004, in a trial which the defendants frequently boycotted, their convictions and sentences were reaffirmed. On the 9 June 2004, after a prosecutor requested quashing the prior verdict on a technicality, the High Court of Appeals ordered Zana and the other defendants be released.
