In 2019, President Cyril Ramaphosa re-appointed Kganyago for another five-year term.
Kganyago, who served as Deputy Governor of South African Reserve Bank from May 2011 to November 2014, was elected in 2011. He was concurrently served by two other people at the Deputy Governor level. He was elected Governor of South African Reserve Bank on 9 November 2014.

Lesetja Kganyago, born 7 October 1965, is a South African economist. He is the Governor at the South African Reserve Bank (SARB). Jacob Zuma, former President of South Africa (RSA), appointed him to this post on 6/10/2014. After Gill Marcus’s expiration on 8 November 2014, he assumed the governorship of South African Reserve Bank.
From 1996 to 1998, Kganyago was the Director of South African National Treasury. He was the Chief Director: Liability for the National Treasury from 1998 to January 2004. He was the Director General of the National Treasury of South Africa from January 2005 to May 2011.
At the beginning of 2018, Governor Kganyago was elected Chairman of the International Monetary and Financial Committee (IMFC), the policy advisory committee of the Board of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a term of three years, effective 18 January 2018.
