He informed the other Ranger about the situation and fought the adversaries with a hand grenade and a grenade to provide suppression while another Ranger was able to move into his position. The enemy quickly reacted by moving closer as well as throwing out grenades. The first blast of grenades threw his co- Rangers on the floor, and injured them both with shrapnel. Another grenade was thrown just a few inches from them. After recognizing the threat staff sergeant Petry without hesitation and without regard to his own safety, consciously and selflessly walked forward grabbed the grenade and to eliminate the immediate threat to his fellow Rangers, threw the grenade away from the other Rangers. When he released the grenade, it exploded the grenade, causing him to lose his right hand on the wrist, and further injuring his body with numerous shrapnel wounds. While he was able to pick up and throw the live grenade that severely injured Staff Sergeant Petry His brave deed was a sure way to save his fellow Rangers from being badly injured or even killed. Despite the extent of his injuries Staff Sergeant Petry kept his mental vigilance to put the tourniquet around his right wrist prior to communicating the situation via radio to coordinate the support of himself and the wounded Rangers. Staff Sergeant Petry’s heroic heroism and commitment to duty is in line with the highest standards of military service and are a tribute to his fellow Rangers, 75th Ranger Regiment, and the United States Army.
Born in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Petry had an active youth, and joined the Army after high school. Completing the Ranger Indoctrination Program, he was deployed several times to both Iraq and Afghanistan as a member of the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment. On 26 May 2008, during his seventh deployment, Petry was a member of a team on a mission to capture a Taliban target in Paktia Province. Despite being wounded in both legs by gunfire, Petry continued to fight and give orders. When a grenade landed between him and two other soldiers, Petry grabbed it and attempted to throw it away from them. He saved the soldiers’ lives but the grenade exploded, severing his right hand.
In 2010, Petry re-enlisted in the U.S. Army for an indefinite term of service. He was stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, where he served as a liaison officer for United States Special Operations Command’s Care Coalition Northwest Region. He assisted ill and injured Rangers as well as their families. In 2011, Petry also began attending Pierce College, pursuing a bachelor of science degree in business management.
