The origin of his family is Deniliquin, New South Wales, Barry attended St Ignatius College in Riverview before being selected as a zone selection during the 1994 National Draft and making his debut in the final round of the 1995 season, against Collingwood. Over the next couple of seasons, he was a forward line with no consistency trying to find a role in a already solid forward line. He didhowever demonstrate the ability to make amazing leaps and earned him the name “Leaping Leo”.
As of 2001 Swans manager Rodney Eade changed coach Rodney Eade Barry onto the linebacker which is where he excelled. Despite being a little short for a fullback of 184 cm, he has played against taller opponents, making the most of his jumping skills and the way he uses his body. In the majority of games, he plays against opponents who are 10-15 cm taller than he actually is, Barry rarely has multiple goals thrown at him. Barry’s distinctive defensive skill was seen in 2004 when Barry held 196 centimeter St Kilda full forward Fraser Gehrig to just two handballs the entire game (for this feat the player received 3 Brownlow Medal votes).
On 18 August 2009, Barry announced he would retire from football at the end of the current season.
