Lenn Sakata is one of the most popular and richest Baseball Player who was born on June 8, 1954 in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. Lenn Haruki Sakata (Japanese: Ban Tian Chun Shu born on June 8 1954) is an American former professional baseball player who played in the Major Leagues primarily as a utility player between 1977 and 1987. He was a member of the Baltimore Orioles 1983 World Series Championship team. It was his only Asian American to play Major League Baseball. The player has the status of Yonsei (fourth- generation American of Japanese descent). Sakata has graduated from Kalani High School in 1971. Sakata played in the NCAA baseball tournament with the Gonzaga Bulldogs of Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington.
Following his playing career’s end, Sakata began coaching in the minor league system. He has been coach of Modesto A’s (1989), San Jose Giants (1999, 2001 2004, 2007), Bakersfield Blaze (2000) and Fresno Grizzlies (2002). On May 31, 2007, Sakata scored his 527th victory as manager of the California League manager, setting the record for the most wins in a lifetime. Sakata was named the farm team manager for Chiba Lotte Marines in 2008. Chiba Lotte Marines in Japan in the year 2008. The Japanese manager returned back to American baseball in the year 2011, becoming the hitting coach of the Asheville Tourists (Low-A). After being the manager of the Modesto Nuts from 2012-2013, Sakata returned to with the San Jose Giants in 2014 and was replaced on the 10th January of in 2015, by Russ Morman taking over as manager from the start of the 2015 season. In the year 2020, Sakata was named the new manager of the Salem-Keizer Volcanoes.

Sakata began the season as a reserve, but he missed the first half of May because of an injured ankle. Then, in September of 1981, Sakata was promoted to the shortstop spot, taking over from the long-time Oriole shortstop Mark Belanger. Sakata was humble about it and said, “I never looked at myself as the next Mark Belanger. It would have been pointless and arrogant for anybody to feel that way.” Sakata was the shortstop of choice for the Orioles at the time Cal Ripken, Jr. was beginning his streak of consecutive games played streak. After Manager Earl Weaver decided to shift Ripken to short in the middle of July 1982, he changed his position from Sakata to third while keeping Sakata at third in the team.
Sakata is the catcher (a position he would not normally play) at the time Tippy Martinez snatched three Toronto Blue Jays off first base in the tenth inning Game 24 of August, 1983 played at Baltimore’s Memorial Stadium. The Orioles were replacing their main catcher and their backup fighting back to win to win in ninth. The trio of Blue Jays hitters reached first base, and each one thought it was easy take a base off Sakata and took a huge lead. Martinez took out all three runners on base. Sakata hit a walk-off homer in the final tenth of the inning to take the lead in the game.
Sakata was selected by CNN Sports Illustrated as one of the 50 greatest sports figures in Hawaii history and is a member of the Hawaii Sports Hall of Fame located in the Bishop Museum. Sakata is also a member of Gonzaga University’s Sports Hall of Fame. In 2018 he was inducted to the California League Hall of Fame for his success as a manager.
