Lelisa Desisa is one of the most popular and richest Marathon Runner who was born on January 14, 1990 in Oromia Region, Ethiopia. Lelisa Desisa Benti (born 14 January 1990) is an Ethiopian long-distance athlete who is specialized in road running events. He was awarded his first international gold medal during the 2009 African Junior Athletics Championships, in which he won the gold medal in 10,000 metres.
In his first race over his marathon course, the athlete recorded one of his fastest debuts when he won at the 2013 Dubai Marathon in a time of 2:04 45 hours. He was amazed by his speed and expressed his desire to set a world record attempt in the near future. Then, three months later at 2013, in the Boston Marathon, he took the win with the time of 2:10:22. Desisa did not suffer any injuries during his victory in the Boston Marathon bombing that occurred immediately after his victory, since the bombing occurred nearly three hours after the time he walked over the line of finish. Desisa then in a well-received gesture, handed over his prized 2013 Boston Marathon winner medal back to the city to pay tribute to those who were killed in the bombings.
On 6 May 2017, Desisa participated in Nike’s Breaking2 attempt to run a sub-2-hour marathon. Desisa held on up until around kilometer 18, when he began to slow and fell off the projected sub-2-hour pace. Eliud Kipchoge won the race in 2:00:25, and Tadese was second in 2:06:51, and Desisa was third with time of 2:14:10. Although Desisa was way far off from actually breaking the barrier, former athlete and world record holder Paula Radcliffe said “He is still very young, at only 27… Once he figures it all out and matures a bit more, he will be unstoppable”.
Desisa won the 2018 New York City Marathon on 4 November 2018 with a time of 2:05:59.
In June 2012, he ran an all-time record time of 27:18.17 minutes to win the 10,000 meters in Liege. He was chosen as an Olympic reserve for the team because of. The best time for 5000 meters of 13:22.91 minutes was recorded in June, however, the race was not held in the Olympics. He attempted at defending his crown in the Delhi Half Marathon but managed only seventh place.

Born in the Shewa zone in the Oromia state in the region from Ethiopia, Desisa made his debut on the international scene of senior road races in 2010 beginning with a sub-60 minute run for third place in the Zayed International Half Marathon in January. He was involved with Wilson Kiprop in a sprint finish at the Paris Half Marathon two months later, finishing in second position. He then took on race on United States road circuit and finished sixth in the Crescent City Classic before taking the second-place finish at the Cherry Blossom Ten Mile Run just behind Stephen Tum. He was the winner of in the Ottawa 10K on May, and took part in the Ethiopian podium sweep by winning the Bolder Boulder two days later. In July, he placed third in a race for the finish line in the Peachtree Road Race, and he also won the Boilermaker Road Race in Utica in a close course record time. He was given his first international senior call-up for in the 2010 IAAF World Half Marathon Championships. He finished seventh overall, running 1:01:28 with his fellow Ethiopian Birhanu Bekele in order to win the bronze medal to the Ethiopians. He recorded a new half marathon record (59:39 minutes) in November during the Delhi Half Marathon and finished just one second behind the the winner Geoffrey Mutai.
He was close to a personal best in the World’s Best 10K in February 2011 and finished third with a time of 28.02 minutes. It was a good way to prepare for the City-Pier-City loop in March, when he won in a five-man sprint and set a personal record time of 59.37 minutes for the half-marathon. Over the course of two days, the winner was Cooper River Bridge Run and set a course record in the Cherry Blossom 10 Miler, surpassing a record that was set since 1996. In June, he climbed the top of the podium in the World 10K Bangalore, coming third in the race behind Kenyan opponents. He wasn’t selected as a participant in this year’s World Championships that year, but he was able to win the half marathon in the 2010 All-Africa Games held that same month. In November, he was back in Delhi and set a personal best of 59:30 mins to win the half marathon and beat Geoffrey Kipsang by a second.
Desisa won the 2015 Boston Marathon on 20 April 2015 with a time of 2:09:17. He came in second in 2016 to fellow Ethiopian Lemi Berhanu Hayle.
