Lee Maracle, OC (born July 2nd 1950) is a Canadian poet and Sto:lo author. She has been a vocal criticism of treatment that is given to Indigenous communities as a result of the Canadian state. She especially focuses on issues pertaining with Indigenous women.
Maracle has delivered hundreds of talks on historical, political and feminist sociological issues in relation to Indigenous people. She also led many workshops on cultural and personal reclamation. She’s been an advisor on First Nations’ self-government and has a long history of community development. Her work has been called “a walking history book” as well as an expert from around the world regarding Canadian First Nations culture and their history. Her beliefs (as broadcast on May 18, 2014 by CBC Radio) are that the Canadian people (not the government since Canada can be described as an “illegitimate state”) should be held accountable for genocide against culture and the stealing of the entire territory by Indigenous people.
